Bullpen Woes Continue as 'Wolves Fall in 12

The SeaWolves could not hold a late lead on Friday night at First Energy Stadium as they dropped the series opener to the Reading Fightin Phils 4-3 in 12 innings.

Reading jumped ahead in the second against Erie starter Warwick Sapuold . Jake Fox led off with a single and was doubled over to third by Aaron Altherr . Zach Collier followed with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Saupold worked out of the jam and would go on to fire five shutout innings after the second.

Phils starter Adam Loewen was equally as impressive allowing one hit over the first six innings of the game. Erie tied the game in the seventh. Jamie Johnson led off with his second walk of the game. Dixon Machado laid down a sacrifice bunt and on a Loewen error, Machado reached and Johnson moved to third. Devon Travis hit into a fielder's choice, plating Johnson, tying the game.

In the eighth, Erie took its first lead of the game. With one out, Francisco Martinez walked and stole his team-leading 18th base. With two outs, Drew Longley singled home Martinez for a 2-1 lead. Longely advanced to second on an error and scored on a Johnson base hit making it 3-1.

Angel Nesbitt replaced Saupold in the eighth and after giving up a leadoff single, retired the side in order. In the ninth, with one out, Nesbitt walked Brock Stassi putting the tying run at the plate in Raywilly Gomez. Gomez connected on a game-tying home run, his first of the season, sending the game to extras.

Reading won the game in the bottom of the 12th against reliever Slade Smith. Smith worked two scoreless frames and was out for his third inning of relief. Michael Serna led off with a single, moved to second on a Carlos Alonso bunt and to third on a wild pitch. Peter Lavin singled home Serna for a 4-3 Reading win.

Smith (2-6) took the loss allowing a run on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Saupold took the no-decision despite his second straight quality start. The righty allowed a run on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts while equaling his season-high of seven innings pitched.
