December 23, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
Moline, IL- Mickey Lang ended a six-round shootout to give Quad City (14-10-1) a 5-4 win against Wichita (17-7-1) at the I-Wireless Center Friday Night. The Thunder remain two points back of Allen for the top spot in the Berry Conference and have played one less game than the Americans.
Lang struck first for Quad City as he capitalized on a weird bounce that came in front of the Thunder net to give the Mallards a 1-0 lead. For the first time in three games, Wichita gave up the first goal.
In the second period, Wichita fell behind 2-0 just 27 seconds in when Jeremy Boyer (4) stole the puck in the defensive zone, came down on a two-on-one and scored a shorthanded goal to push the Mallard lead to 2-0. It was the first shorthanded goal allowed by Wichita this season. However, Wichita answered 50 seconds later with a power play goal to cut the lead to 2-1 when Kevin Seibel fired a shot on net and the bouncing puck was knocked over the line by Matt Robinson (10). Andrew Martens (7) tied the game at 3:25 as he went coast-to-coast, took a shot from the high slot that bounced off Mallards goalie David Brown and in the net to make it 2-2. It didn't take long for the Mallards to answer as Brandon Marino (15) made it 3-2 at 7:27 of the second period. At 16:58, Alex Bourret (11) tied the game at three with a power play goal as he caught a pass in the left circle and beat Brown to extend his point scoring streak to five games.
The Mallards took the lead in the third period at 13:54 when Jared Brown (10) fired a low shot that got through and put the Mallards up 4-3. However, Wichita tied the game just four minutes later off a face-off. Aaron Davis won the draw, gave it back to Jarred Mohr, who then fed it over to Andrew Martens (8) and his one-timer beat Brown. After deciding 17-straight games in regulation, Wichita would be forced into an extra session for the second consecutive game.
After a five-minute scoreless overtime, Wichita headed to its first shootout since November 5th in Missouri. The only scorer in the shootout for the Thunder was Matt Summers in round five, which kept Wichita's hopes alive after trailing 1-0 entering the final shooter. In round six, Lang scored to give the Mallards the lead and Brown stopped Aaron Davis to give Quad City a 5-4 win. It was Wichita's first loss in a shootout this season.
Wichita closes out a three-game road swing in Tulsa on Christmas Day against the Oilers before returning home Tuesday, December 27th to face rival, Missouri. For tickets to that game against the Mavericks, call 755-SEAT, visit the INTRUST Bank Arena box office or online at www.selectaseat.com.
