December 23, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Gems would fall behind early and run into solid goaltending through sixty minutes when they fell 4-0 to the first place Fort Wayne Komets on Angry Birds Night on Friday inside the historic Hara Arena.

Skating into the final game before Christmas, the Gems matched up with the Komets right off the opening draw, and would generate quality chances in front of Fort Wayne netminder Nick Boucher as the hometown crowd continued to file through the turnstiles. The visitors would strike first, when they capitalized on a turnover to bury a shot past a screened Bryan Hogan to give the Komets a 1-0 lead at the 9:45 mark. Both goaltenders held their ice through the horn, and Fort Wayne skated their one goal lead into the dressing room for the first intermission. Shots on goal favored the Komets 15 to 10 after twenty minutes.

The Komets would dominate a second period that would see three unanswered goals posted against the Gems. Revving the orange offensive machinery at the 4:13 mark, the Komets knocked a shot past Hogan to bump their lead to 2-0 before a breakaway goal would extend the lead to 3-0 at 12:08. Despite a flurry of Gems chances, Fort Wayne would rely on their league-best powerplay to cash in at the 15:11 mark to skate a 4-0 lead over the Gems into the second intermission. Shots in the middle frame again favored the Komets 12-11.

Neither team would be able to find the back of the net in the third period despite a late effort by the Gems on the powerplay. Fort Wayne would hold onto their 4-0 lead through sixty minutes, earning their Turner Conference leading 16th win of the season. Shots on goal in the third favored the Gems 7 to 3 for a game total of 30-28 for the Komets. Fort Wayne went 1 for 4 on the powerplay, while the Gems were held scoreless through their four man advantages.

With the loss, the Gems drop their record to 11-11-4 with 26 points in the Turner Conference. Dayton returns to action after the Christmas weekend when they travel to the Ford Center in downtown Evansville, Indiana next Tuesday to battle the IceMen.
