Wichita Thunder News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MO- The Wichita Thunder lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Missouri Mavericks at the Independence Events Center on Friday night. The Thunder scored the first goal in the history of the Independence Events Center at 18:30 in the first. Glenn Detulleo made a perfect backdoor pass to Joel Hanson who tapped the puck past the left side of Doug Groenestege. It was Hanson's first point of the season.
At 1:50 in the second, Marc Belanger helped the Thunder break an 0 for 32 skid on the power play, scoring under the crossbar to the short side of the net to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Shaun Arvai scored directly after a faceoff that opened a Mavericks' man advantage.
Wichita clinged to a 2-1 lead late into the third, but Jeff MacDermid flipped a shot from the far halfwall that snuck past Scott Campbell to tie the game at 2-2.
After neither team scored in overtime, in which the Thunder survived two Mavericks' power plays, Wichita lost 3-0 in the shootout. Chad Hinz, MacDermid, and Bill Vandemeer all scored, while Mike Kneeland, Belanger, and Detulleo all came up empty on their attempts.
Scott Campbell was terrific in goal, saving a season-high 40 shots on just 42 attempts in the loss. Campbell also denied Nick Sirota on a penalty shot in the second period that preserved a lead for Wichita.
