Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS - Cam Severson scored twice as the Mississippi RiverKings defeated the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 4-1 on Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The loss was the Mudbugs' first of the year on the road after a 4-0 start away from home this season. The ‘Bugs are now 4-6-0 after ten games this year.

Matt Cook scored in his first game as a Mudbug to try and spark a third-period comeback, but Bossier-Shreveport could not muster any more offense with six regular forwards out with injuries. The ‘Bugs were outshot 33-29 in the contest.

Mississippi took a 2-0 lead in the first period on a pair of powerplay goals. After the Mudbugs missed on two powerplays in the opening frame, the RiverKings scored twice in the last five minutes of the period. First Cam Severson tipped in a long shot from the point and then Steve Makway's long slapshot beat John DeCaro through a screen to give Mississippi a 2-0 advantage through 20 minutes. The ‘Kings outshot the ‘Bugs 16-8 in the period, which also featured two fights. Tysen Dowzak squared off with Steve Makway and Kirk Medernach took on Adam Smyth.

The teams traded more powerplay chances in the second frame, but neither team could find the back of the net. The Mudbugs had a few quality scoring chances, but Ray Jean kept the shutout going through 40 minutes and the score stayed 2-0 into the third. The third fight of the game saw Bossier-Shreveport's James DeLory handle Mississippi's David Simoes in his first professional fight.

Ryan Campbell's blocked shot led to the RiverKings' third goal of the game, sending Ryan Held on a breakaway where he scored his league-leading 11th of the season mid-way through the period. Cook then scored with just under five minutes remaining, but Mudbugs would get no closer and Severson capped it off with an empty net goal for Mississippi.

John DeCaro falls to 4-3 this year despite making 29 saves, while Ray Jean earned the win with 22 stops. Ian Keserich played the third period for the RiverKings, making six saves. Bossier-Shreveport finished 0 for 6 on the powerplay, while Mississippi was 2 for 5.

The Mudbugs will now return home to host the Rapid City Rush at 7:05 pm tomorrow night at the CenturyTel Center. Saturday's game will be the first meeting of the season between the Mudbugs and Rush, who played at Tulsa on Friday. Group packages and mini-plans are available through the Mudbugs office at 752-BUGS, while individual tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster at 741-9700.
