Odessa Jackalopes News Release
(Odessa, TX) - The Odessa Jackalopes scored a power play goal for the ninth straight game, and Kenny Bernard extended his goal-scoring streak to eight games, as the team topped the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, 5-2, on Friday night at the Ector County Coliseum. It was Odessa's sixth consecutive win, moving their record to 9-1-1 on the 2009-10 Central Hockey League season.
The scoring began early in the first when Rio's Zak McClellan scored a shorthanded goal at 4:36 for the first period's only marker. Grant Goeckner-Zeller added the assist.
The Jackalopes answered back with three unanswered goals in the second starting with Paul Kelly's seventh of the season at 1:58. Alex Dunn added a power play goal at 3:52 to gain the 2-1 lead for the Jackalopes. Then at 9:30, Sebastien Thinel tapped home a rebound for his third of the year. Odessa led 3-1 after two. Dominic Leveille had assists on both Kelly's and Dunn's goals.
In the third period, Stacy Bauman pulled the Bees to within one on a wrist shot from the blue line at 1:53, but that's as close as the Bees would get. The Jackalopes pulled away with goals by Kenny Bernard at 6:24 and Mike Lesperance at 16:27. Bernard's was a shorthanded score - his second and Odessa's third of the year.
Joel Martin made 16 saves in the win, his fourth of the season. Andy Franck took the loss, making 35 saves for the Killer Bees.
The Jackalopes host the Amarillo Gorillas on Saturday at 7:05 PM at the Ector County Coliseum. There will be a postgame auction for the Cystic Fibrosis Jerseys the Jackalopes are wearing this weekend, and the action can be heard on 102.1 Jack FM.
The Odessa Jackalopes are the Central Hockey League affiliate for the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The team is in the middle of their 13th season in the Permian Basin. Season tickets, mini-plans, and single game tickets are available by calling (432) 552-PUCK or visiting jackalopes.org.
