Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Charles Lachance tied the game for the Mississippi RiverKings (9-6-1) late in the action, but the Bloomington Thunder (4-10-0) responded quickly to take game one of a two-game weekend series 2-1.

The RiverKings had to battle from behind for the second consecutive game early in the first. Dustin Hopfner's slap shot found it's way through traffic in front of Dan McWhinney 7:08 into the first period to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.

The teams skated to a scoreless second before the RiverKings tied it in the third. Charles Lachance's fifth goal of the season evened the score at one after he buried Daniel Sobotka's rebound past B.J. O'Brien with 13:05 remaining in regulation.

But the Thunder came back just 30 seconds later. Former RiverKing Daniel Barczuk beat McWhinney through the legs on an odd-man rush to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead. The RiverKings had a five-on-three late in the game and a power play for the remaining 2:36, but could not capitalize as the Thunder handed the RiverKings their third straight loss.

Dan McWhinney (4-5-0) stopped 28 of 30 shots against in the loss, while B.J. O'Brien (1-2-0) turned aside 30 of 31 shots against in the win. The RiverKings went 1-6 on the power play as they held the Thunder scoreless on three man-advantage opportunities.

During the game, the RiverKings collected teddy bears for the team's annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by 95.3 The Rebel benefitting Toys for Tots. The RiverKings also auctioned off special military jerseys presented by Belhaven University. The jersey auction brought in $5,900 for the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.

The RiverKings and Thunder battle again tomorrow afternoon at 3:05 p.m. in a rematch of tonight's game. Tickets are still available through ticketmaster.com and the Landers Center Box Office. For more information, check out riverkings.com.
