Mississippi RiverKings News Release

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Mississippi RiverKings (9-5-1) rallied late in the third, but the Pensacola Ice Flyers (10-6-1) held on for the 6-5 victory on Friday night.

The Ice Flyers waited little time finding the back of the net. Paul Rodrigues tallied his fourth goal of the year on a pass from Josh Turnbull to put Pensacola ahead 1-0. Just over four minutes later, the Ice Flyers struck again. Mike MacIntyre's wrist shot from the high slot beat Matt Krahn blocker side to give Pensacola a 2-0 lead. The RiverKings cut the deficit to one at the 13:26 mark of the first with Tyler Melancon's first goal of the season, but Pensacola answered back with Justin Alonzo's first of the year with just 15 seconds remaining in the first to give the Ice Flyers a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes.

In the second, the RiverKings capitalized on a power play opportunity. Devin Mantha picked up a Daniel Sobotka rebound and beat MacKinnon top shelf to cut the deficit to one with under two minutes remaining in the second period.

After a calm second period, the two teams combined for six goals in the third. Justin Alonzo tallied his second goal of the night on a redirect in front of Krahn on the power play three minutes in to give the Ice Flyers a 4-2 lead.

But the RiverKings battled back. Corey Fulton notched his first goal of the year on a rebound in front of MacKinnon to cut the deficit down to one before Todd Hosmer's wrist shot on the power play found the back of the net to tie the game at four with 12:34 remaining in regulation.

Pensacola came back two minutes later to regain the lead. Josh Turnbull buried a rebound home on the power play at the 9:27 mark of the third before Paul Rodrigues notched his second goal of the game to put the Ice Flyers up 6-4. Todd Hosmer capitalized for his second power play goal of the night at the 13:46 mark of the third to bring the RiverKings within one. But the RiverKings were unable to capitalize on a five-minute power play in the dying moments of the third as they fell to the Ice Flyers 6-5 on the road.

Matt Krahn (5-1-1) took the loss after stopping 19 of 25 shots against. Ross MacKinnon (1-0-0) stopped 33 of 38 shots against in the win.

The RiverKings return to the Landers Center tomorrow night to take on the Bloomington Thunder at 7:05 p.m. for Military Appreciation Night presented by Belhaven University and Teddy Bear Toss Night by 95.3 The Rebel. Active and retired members of the military and their families receive $5 anywhere in the building with valid military identification at the Landers Center Box Office. Be sure to bring a Teddy Bear to throw on the ice after the RiverKings' first goal to benefit Toys for Tots.
