Trenton Thunder News Release
A first-inning RBI-single by Ryan McBroom provided the only support the Thunder needed Tuesday night, as three pitchers worked their way out of numerous jams en route to a 1-0 win over the Hartford Yard Goats in front of a crowd of 5,138 at ARM & HAMMER Park.
McBroom's single came off Hartford starter Evan Grills, after Devyn Bolasky and Zack Zehner had opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles.
Grills went on to hold Trenton scoreless over the next five innings with the help of three double play grounders. The southpaw battled with Thunder right-hander Brian Keller, who kept the Yard Goats scoreless despite allowing seven hits over five and two-thirds innings. Keller struck out six and walked none.
The Yard Goats put at least one runner on base in six of the final eight innings, including placing the tying run in scoring position three times, but despite recording 10 hits, did not manage a run and left 10 runners stranded.
The biggest Hartford threat came in the sixth inning, when Keller departed with runners on first and second and two out. Phillip Diehl entered and walked Dom Nunez to load the bases before striking out Sam Hilliard to escape the jam.
Brady Lail followed Diehl with one-and-a-third scoreless innings, serving as a bridge to Caleb Frare, who retired the side in order in the ninth.
The Thunder also missed opportunities to pair their lead, stranding five runners over their final five innings at the plate as Hartford relievers Mitch Horacek and Logan Cozart kept the game close.
Bolasky, Zehner, and Kyle Holder led Trenton with two hits each, and Zehner extended his on-base streak to a season-high 10 games. The shutout was the Thunder's sixth of the season, and evened the series at one win apiece.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Wednesday morning at 11am against the Yard Goats. The Thunder have yet to announce their starting pitcher, while RHP Ryan Castellani (5-9, 5.59) will go for Hartford. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
