Clearwater Threshers News Release
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers overcame a 6-0 deficit on Friday night, rallying for six runs in the top of the eighth inning to stun the Bradenton Marauders, 9-6 in the series opener at LECOM Park.
Henri Lartigue delivered the game-tying knock, and Kyle Martin capped it off with a three-run blast with two down in the eighth to lift the Threshers to the comeback victory. After the Threshers had trailed by six early and were held to only two hits through the first five innings, Clearwater surged back to keep pace with first-place Dunedin, as the Threshers (24-15) (56-51) remain just two games back of the division lead.
JP Crawford finished 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the third game of his rehab assignment in Clearwater, as he works his way back from a left hand fracture.
Following a one hour and 32 minute rain delay, the game got underway just past 8 p.m.
Bradenton (14-24) (49-54) bounded ahead with a five-spot against Adonis Medina in the bottom of the first. After Jared Oliva reached on an error on third baseman Raul Rivas, Brandenton proceeded to string together three consecutive singles to bring the first run of the night home.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, Bligh Madris turned on a 2-2 pitch and lifted a grand slam out to right, opening up a 5-0 lead for Bradenton.
The Marauders added on in the third against reliever Blake Quinn, when an RBI grounder from Garrett Brown made it a 6-0 game.
Dario Agrazal held the Threshers to just two hits in five scoreless innings, but the Threshers cut the deficit in half against big league rehabber AJ Schugel in the sixth.
Grenny Cumana got it going by ripping a double to left, and Rivas followed with a single to center. Jose Gomez knocked a base hit to left-center, scoring Cumana to get the Threshers on the board.
Arquimedes Gamboa loaded the bases with a single to right, and Schugel induced a double play ball off the bat of Mickey Moniak, but that permitted Rivas to cross the plate. Crawford struck a double to right-center to score Gomez, bringing the Threshers to within three.
Will Hibbs (3-0) quited the Marauders order, delivering a perfect three innings of relief in his longest outing of the season. He set down all nine he faced and struck out one.
Down by three, Clearwater rallied back in the eighth.
After Rivas drew a leadoff walk facing reliever Deivy Mendez (0-3), Gomez hit into a force out at second, and Gamboa was hit by a pitch. Moniak came through with a grounder through the right side for an RBI single, bringing the Threshers to within two with the tying run on base.
Mendez managed to strike out Crawford for the second out, but Lartigue battled him through seven pitches and delivered a line drive to center for a two-run single, tying the ballgame at six apiece.
Bradenton again went to the bullpen and called upon Angel German, who walked Luke Williams, with ball four coming on a pitch clock violation.
Martin put an exclamation mark on the comeback, belting a three-run home run to right to put the Threshers on top, 9-6.
The Marauders put a pair on with two outs against Grant Dyer in the bottom half, and brought the go-ahead to the plate after Albert Baur walked facing Jonathan Hennigan. The lefty put a stop to the rally, striking out Hunter Owen to end the threat.
Addison Russ finished it off for the second straight night, striking out the side to earn his eighth save in as many tries.
Game two of the three-game set will take place on Saturday with first pitch at 6:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.
