Waters Picks up First Hit in Loss to Miracle

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Fire Frogs' struggles continued on Friday night, as the Atlanta Braves' Advanced-A affiliate dropped its ninth consecutive game in a 7-2 defeat to the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium. The streak matches a team record set on July 23 through Aug. 1 of 2018.

Florida (14-23, 43-60) grabbed the early lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Drew Waters (1x4, R) picked up his first hit at the High-A level with an infield single to start the contest. The 100th-overall prospect (MLB.com) reached third on an errant pickoff throw by Brusdar Graterol (3-2), and scored on an RBI single by Braxton Davidson (1x4, RBI) for the 1-0 advantage.

The lead did not last long, as Tucker Davidson (6-9) battled command in the bottom half of the inning, yielding a two runs on just one hit and four walks on 37 pitches, with only 14 going for strikes.

The starter issued free passes to the first two batters he to move the tying run into scoring position. In an at-bat to Taylor Grzelakowski, Royse Lewis broke for third and swiped the bag, with the throw from William Contreras going into left field, allowing the base stealer to take home and knot the game at a run apiece.

After striking out Taylor Grzelakowski for the first out, he southpaw then allowed an run-scoring double to Alex Kiriloff to tie the game at a run apiece.

Davidson settled down after the first inning, finishing the night with just the two runs allowed through four innings in the loss.

Fort Myers (23-17, 51-57) tallied two insurance runs against Chase Johnson-Mullins in the seventh, and added onto Florida's deficit with a three-spot against Brandon White in the ninth.

Florida will attempt to even the series in game two of the three-game weekend set against the Fort Myers Miracle on Saturday night at Hammond Stadium. RHP Walter Borkovich (0-0, --) makes his Florida State League debut for the Fire Frogs against the Miracle's RHP Andro Cutura (3-6, 4.89). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
