Threshers Down Bradenton 6-1 to Take Series

April 21, 2017 - Florida State League (FSL) - Clearwater Threshers News Release

BRADENTON, Fla. - Damek Tomscha blasted a three-run home run in the second inning, capping a five-run rally as the Clearwater Threshers knocked off the Bradenton Marauders, 6-1 to earn the series victory on Thursday night.

The Threshers (11-4) own the best overall record in the Florida State League.

Tomscha reached base four times and finished 2-for-3, including the three-run homer, a single, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch.

Clearwater took charge early on Thursday.

With two on and two out in the second, Mark Laird beat out an infield single to load the bases, and Grenny Cumana dropped a blooper to right to plate a pair and give the Threshers the early lead.

Tomscha stepped in and swatted the first offering from Taylor Hearn (1-2) deep out to left for a three-run jack, putting Clearwater comfortablly ahead 5-0. The drive was Tomscha's fourth home run of the season, boosting his RBI total to eight.

Franklyn Kilome and Austin Davis took care of the rest.

Kilome turned in six strong innings to earn his first victory, holding the Marauders (9-6) to one run on four hits and a pair of walks. The only blemish was a solo homer by Mitchell Tolman in the third inning, which cut the lead to 5-1.

Threshers starting pitchers have allowed just 14 earned runs in 84 innings this year - a 1.50 ERA.

Clearwater added its final run in the fifth inning without the aid of a hit. Tomscha led off with a walk, Wilson Garcia reached on an error by the second baseman Tolman, and Jose Pujols worked a free pass to load the bases. Jan Hernandez was then hit by a pitch to push a run home, making it 6-1.

Davis locked down the final three innings to earn his first save. The lefty worked around three singles in the eighth, striking out Casey Hughston looking to strand the bases loaded.

Kilome and Davis struck out five apiece, giving Clearwater its sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season.

The Threshers return home to Spectrum Field to open a three-game series with the Florida Fire Frogs, beginning on Friday at 6:15 p.m. Friday is Bark at the Ballpark, with proceeds from all dog tickets sold benefitting the Humane Society of Pinellas. Cole Irvin (2-0) takes the hill against fellow lefty Luiz Gohara (1-0), and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 6 p.m.
