Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL - The Clearwater Threshers defeated the Daytona Tortugas, 18-5 on Sunday night at Radiology Associates Field.
The Tortugas took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run single from LF Phillip Ervin in the second inning, and LHP Nick Routt held the Threshers off the board for the first three frames.
Things got out somewhat of hand from there. Clearwater put six straight men on base to start the fourth inning (five singles and one error), and capped off a four-run rally with a sacrifice fly from Drew Stankiewicz to take a 4-2 lead.
Daytona would answer with three runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 advantage right back. SS Alex Blandino started the inning with a single, and scored on a double from DH Sebastian Elizalde. A 1B Robert Ramirez single and two Thresher errors later, Daytona had plated three runs in the inning.
In the sixth, Clearwater broke the game wide open, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs on eight hits. RHP Jimmy Moran induced a ground ball to start the inning, but the next eight consecutive batters reached against Moran and LHP Nolan Becker. The decisive inning featured a two-run single from Devin Lohman and a three-run triple by Dylan Cozens.
Through the first six innings, the Threshers had gone an astounding 10-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
Clearwater added six more runs in the eighth inning, sending 11 more batters to the plate.
RHP Nick Howard pitched well, allowing no runs and no hits with two walks and a strikeout in 1.2 innings. 2B Wendell Soto pitched the ninth, and worked around two walks by turning a 1-6-3 double play and inducing a fly out to center.
Each of the other five Tortugas pitchers allowed at least three earned runs.
