Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
SALEM, VA - Mike Olt and former Red Sox prospect Chris McGuiness each hit solo home runs for the Pelicans, but Myrtle Beach's offense again fell just short on Saturday night in Salem falling by one run for the third straight game in this series, 3-2 at the hands of the Red Sox.
Salem did something on Saturday night that the Pelicans could not, and it proved to be the difference: the Red Sox built an inning. Entering the bottom of the fourth scoreless, the Red Sox put four of their first five batters on via base hits with a leadoff Kolbrin Vitek triple followed by an RBI single by Reynaldo Rodriguez, a bunt single by Shannon Wilkerson and, with one out, a two-run knock by David Mailman to make it 3-0.
Against Red Sox starter Drake Britton and reliever Tom Ebert, the Pelicans couldn't muster anything of a sizeable offensive threat. Third baseman Olt led off the bottom of the fifth inning to cut into the Salem lead at 3-1, and first baseman McGuiness, in his first game back from a disabled list stay dating back to April 27, did the same in the seventh to make it a 3-2 game. The Pelicans, however, never put more than one man on the basepaths at the same time in any inning and only added three other hits on the night. Vinny DiFazio was left in scoring position at second, where he reached on a double two outs after McGuiness's homer, to end the seventh as the Pelicans' only real threat.
Myrtle Beach starter Barret Loux (2-2) tossed six effective innings, allowing all three Red Sox runs earned on seven hits while striking out six and not walking a man. Britton (1-2) put up his first quality outing in the Carolina League, allowing just one run on two hits with two Ks and no walks in his six innings of work. Ebert (S, 1) pitched the seventh through the ninth, also allowing one run with two strikeouts and no walks.
The Pelicans entered this four-game series one game out of first place but now need a win in the series finale to avoid a sweep and keep themselves to within three games of the top spot in the Carolina League Southern Division. Lefty Robbie Ross (3-1, 3.71) gets the ball for the Sunday afternoon finale at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
Following this seven-game road trip, the Birds return home to the Grand Strand for the first of six with the Kinston Indians and Lynchburg Hillcats on May 10. Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field Box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
