Offensive Struggles Continue in 8-0 Combined Defeat

KINSTON, NC - The Potomac Nationals' offensive woes continued Saturday in Kinston, as the Nats were shutout in both games. With a 3-0 defeat in the matinee and a 5-0 loss in the nightcap, Potomac falls to eight games below .500 and has now lost five straight.

In Game One, top prospect Drew Pomeranz gave the Nationals (10-18) chances early. Once they failed to cash in, the lefthander settled in and dominated. Potomac stranded two runners in both the first two innings, and would have just two more the rest of the way. Pomeranz struck out eight over five innings, allowed just three hits and remarkably earned just his first win in the Carolina League (the southpaw has been dominant in six outings, allowing just five earned runs).

The Indians (13-15) took the lead they would never relinquish in the second inning. After a pair of one-out walks, Roberto Perez flied to center field to move Adam Abraham to third. A passed ball brought Abraham home and gave the Indians all the cushion they would need. Cameron Selik was solid in his Carolina League debut but received no run support.

The Tribe tacked on two runs with solo home runs; first by Bo Greenwell in the third then Chase Burnett in the sixth. Toru Murata and Preston Guimlet each struck out a pair in their scoreless innings; Guimlet earned his fifth save. The Nats struck out twelve times in the seven-inning opener.

Things did not get better in the nightcap. Again, they had two men aboard in the opening inning, after singles from Jeff Kobernus and Cutter Dykstra. But they did not score, and would not the rest of the way.

Clayton Cook struck out six over five innings and allowed only four hits while shutting out Potomac. The game stayed scoreless until the fifth, when the K-Tribe finally broke through.

A leadoff double by Jason Smit set the stage; Smit moved to third on a Doug Pickens groundout. Justin Toole then singled to center to score Smit. Once again, that run would hold up.

Kinston tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth. Bases loaded walks to Smit and Pickens made it 3-0, and a two-out single by Dan DeGeorge put the game away. Potomac would load the bases in the top of the seventh but again failed to push a run across.

The Nats look to Danny Rosenbaum to play stopper tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 PM. He will square off against lefthander Giovanni Soto in the series finale.
