Three-run homers lead Coyotes to doubleheader sweep over Colts
SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts out-homered the Edinburg Coyotes 3-2 in Game 2 of their doubleheader on July 31 at Foster Field, but the three solo homers San Angelo hit could not compete with the two three-run shots by the Coyotes, who moved into a virtual tie with Laredo for the fourth and final United League playoff spot with a 10-4 win in front of 2,044 fans to sweep the doubleheader.
Logan Williamson (9-4) struggled from the get-go. Angelo Fermin led off with a single, and moved to third on a double by Alex Entrekin. Daryl Jones then doubled to right-center to bring home two runs, and then with one out, Eric Gonzalez singled home the third run of the inning. But the lefty escaped the rest of the inning, and the Colts (42-27) tied it up in the bottom half of the frame.
John Anderson led off with a walk against Eric Montoya (8-2), but he was forced off the bases, and Tyrone Pendergrass was caught stealing. The momentum was regained by Jose Torres, who homered to left-center. Then Andres Rodriguez went deep to left-center as well, and Aaron Cone hit one off the clubhouse in left to tie the game. It was the first time this season that the Colts have hit three homers in a row, as they knotted the game at 3-3.
But Williamson was touched up again in the second, giving up a one-out, three-run homer to Entrekin to give the Coyotes (33-37) the lead again. After the Colts got one back on a bases-loaded walk to Jason Landreth in the third, Argelis Nunez went the other way for a three-run homer in the fourth to make it 9-4.
The lefty was then pulled, giving up a season-high 13 hits, tying a season-high with the nine runs allowed, without getting an out in the fourth inning.
The Colts went down quietly the rest of the way, getting just one hit in the final three frames off Montoya, who went six innings for the win, striking out six and walking five, giving up five hits. Luke Prihoda pitched a scoreless seventh to finish it off, although the Colts did pick up two hits in that inning.
Notes: The Colts are now 1-3 in doubleheader games, having split with Laredo on July 22...San Angelo is on a streak where they have not followed a win by only one loss, losing exactly two straight the last three times they have had winning streaks end...San Angelo has not lost more than three in a row, which the Colts have done only twice...Rodriguez finished the doubleheader 2-for-4, and is 18 for his last 28, with five homers and 17 RBIs.
The Colts will try to get back on the winning side as they conclude the series and the homestand on Friday, August 1 at 7:05 p.m. CT for Texas Lottery Night.
