Colts bats go quiet in Game 1 loss

July 31, 2008 - United League Baseball (ULB) - San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Colts had come into Thursday's doubleheader with the Edinburg Coyotes on a six-game winning streak, scoring at least eight runs in all six games. But in the first half of the doubleheader, James Mondesir and Julio Castro held the Colts to just one hit and one run, as the Coyotes got two unearned runs in the third to nip San Angelo 2-1.

Making his first appearance since being acquired by the Colts (42-27) on July 30, lefty Brian Wilburn (0-1) pitched well, working out of trouble in the first and second. With no one on and two outs in the third, Alex Entrekin hit a grounder to short that Albert Gonzalez bobbled for an error. The next batter, Daryl Jones, made the Colts pay, hitting a two-run homer to left-center to make it 2-0.

San Angelo got one back of Mondesir (1-2) in the fourth. John Anderson walked to start the frame, and then moved to third on a pair of groundouts. With Andres Rodriguez batting, Mondesir threw a wild pitch to bring home Anderson.

However, Mondesir pitched around a one-out walk in the fifth and a one-out hit-by-pitch in the sixth to keep the Colts at bay, getting Rodriguez to line out sharply to left to end the sixth with the potential tying run at second.

Castro picked up his ninth save, allowing a walk to Jack Chapman before striking out pinch-hitter Jason Landreth to give Edinburg (32-37) the victory. Castro has now allowed just the one walk in five scoreless innings against the Colts this year.
