Memphis Redbirds News Release
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - The Memphis Redbirds (2-0) used a three-run first inning to shoot past the New Orleans Baby Cakes (0-2) Friday night in New Orleans, La.
Wilfredo Tovar went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for Memphis, and six other Redbirds had a hit. Three Redbirds pitchers limited New Orleans to five hits, one night after seven Memphis hurlers were needed in a 5-4, 13-inning win.
Todd Cunningham got things going with a double to start the game, which followed Harrison Bader hitting a leadoff home run last night. After Tommy Pham reached on an error Patrick Wisdom plated Cunningham on a sacrifice fly, and Paul DeJong doubled home two to give Memphis a 3-0 lead after a half-inning.
Tyler Lyons, on an injury rehabilitation assignment from St. Louis, allowed three hits in 3.1 shutout innings before giving way to Arturo Reyes in the fourth inning after 58 pitches on the night.
Reyes kept the Baby Cakes at bay until they plated a run in the sixth, and the score remained 3-1 in favor of Memphis until the Redbirds plated two insurance runs in the top of the eighth. Tovar provided the big blow with a two-run double down the left-field line that scored Bader and Wisdom, who reached on a walk and a single, respectively.
Rowan Wick pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, striking out three, to seal the Memphis victory.
Memphis and New Orleans resume their five-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00. The Redbirds return to Memphis for their home opener on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Next week's seven-game homestand includes all-you-can-eat crawfish and Thirsty Thursday on Thursday, a new-logo performance t-shirt giveaway on Friday, postgame fireworks on Saturday, and an Easter Sunday that includes a postgame candy drop from a helicopter and more.
