ROUND ROCK, Texas - For the second night in a row, the Round Rock Express (1-1) and rival Nashville Sounds (1-1) needed 11 innings to decide a winner. However, this time it was the visitors collecting an 8-6 win at Dell Diamond.
E-Train RHP Brady Dragmire (0-1, 13.50) took the loss after allowing a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the 11th inning. Sounds RHP Aaron Kurcz (1-0, 4.50) notched the win despite allowing a solo home run during his two innings of relief. RHP Bobby Wahl worked out of an 11th inning jam to earn the save.
Round Rock wasted no time jumping on the board in the first inning. SS Doug Bernier led off with a single, then 3B Will Middlebrooks blasted the first Dell Dinger of the year, a towering shot that crashed into the batter's eye in center field.
The scoring continued as LF Cesar Puello and 1B Ronald Guzman worked back-to-back walks. Last night's walkoff hero, RF Preston Beck lined a triple to right field, doubling the lead to 4-0. 2B Luis Marte got in on the act, singling home Beck to give the Express an early 5-0 advantage.
The Sounds wouldn't go quietly. SS Chad Pinder opened the second inning with a double before racing home to score on a Ryan Lavarnway double two hitters later. RF Andrew Lambo opened the fifth inning with a double, then 2B Franklin Barreto dropped a two-run homer into the Express bullpen. CF Jaff Decker narrowed the gap to 5-4 by collecting a single, stealing second, then sprinting home on an ensuing Chris Parmelee single.
The visitors knotted the game at five in the ninth. Lavarnway welcomed Express reliever Keone Kela to the contest with a one-out single then was driven home on a Decker double. Nashville took their first lead of the series in the 10th thanks to a leadoff homer from Parmelee. However, E-Train CF Jared Hoying answered in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot that crashed into the right field berm, leveling the contest at six.
Nashville struck again for two runs in the 11th. Lambo started the rally with a leadoff single then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt courtesy of Barreto. Following a Decker walk, DH Renato Nunez singled to score Lambo. The knockout blow came in the next at-bat as Parmelee dropped a soft fly ball to shallow center field that allowed another run to cross the plate.
The Express threatened in the bottom of the inning. C Patrick Cantwell singled then Bernier worked a one-out walk, however DH Travis Snider struck out before Middlebrooks flew out to end the contest.
Round Rock and Nashville resume their five-game set on Saturday evening. E-Train RHP Dillon Gee (0-0, 0.00) is slated to take the mound against Sounds RHP Cesar Valdez (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. The first 2,500 fans through the gates at Dell Diamond will receive an Express cap, courtesy of the Nyle Maxwell Family of Dealerships.
