Wren's Walk-Off Caps Wild Win in Extras

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Kyle Wren's game-winning RBI single capped off a wild 10-inning affair Friday night as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox rallied in consecutive innings to defeat the Omaha Storm Chasers, 8-7, in front of 3,210 at Security Service Field.

The Sky Sox left fielder grounded the walk-off hit through the second base hole, scoring Yadiel Rivera for the team's second straight win to open 2017. The hosts began the 10th inning with a blast. After Garrett Cooper singled to open the frame, Brett Phillips launched his first Triple-A home run down the right field line to tie the game at seven.

Omaha (0-2) opened the scoring in the first inning. With two outs, Peter O'Brien grounded a RBI single between the shifted second baseman and shortstop to score Billy Burns and put the visitors up 1-0.

Kansas City's top affiliate extended their lead in the fifth inning. With two outs, Whit Merrifield skied a two-run home run over the 350-foot sign in left field, giving the Chasers a 3-0 margin.

Colorado Springs (2-0) spent much of the game trailing, thanks to the pitching outing of Jake Junis. The righty retired 18 of the first 20 batters he faced before running into trouble in the seventh inning.

The Sky Sox got to Junis with a pair of runs via a two-run single by Nate Orf. The second baseman recorded his first hit of the season, but Omaha reliever Brandon McCarthy shut down the rally to keep the visitors ahead.

The Storm Chasers added insurance in the ensuing frame. Ryan O'Hearn hit an opposite-field shot to left field and Cam Gallagher drove in Bubba Starling two batters later to re-extend the lead to three runs.

The rallying spark that served as the theme for much of the 2016 season came back in the second game of 2017. Down three in the bottom of the ninth, Nick Noonan drove in Orf, who began the inning by reaching on a triple off Omaha reliever Al Alburquerque. With two outs, a routine groundball that would have ended the game was bobbled by Ryan O'Hearn, allowing Wren to reach safely. After a stolen base, Eric Sogard lined a two-run, game-tying single to score Noonan and Wren and send the game into extra innings.

Tyler Cravy (1-0, 9.00) earned the victory with two innings of relief. Paolo Espino threw 5.2 innings in his first Pacific Coast League start, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out seven. Andrew Edwards (0-1, 40.50) took the loss for Omaha, allowing three runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.

A pair of top pitching prospects take the mound Saturday afternoon when the Sky Sox and Storm Chasers tangle in game No. 3 of the series at 4 p.m. MT. Milwaukee's No. 7 prospect Brandon Woodruff faces the Royals' No. 1 prospect Josh Staumont in a potential series-clinching game for the hosts.
