Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (June 29, 2012) - The Dash could not overcome a big fifth inning from Frederick, falling 5-4 to the Keys in front of 5,513 fans Friday night at BB&T Ballpark. It is the first time the Dash have lost a series to the Keys all season.
Frederick (5-4, 32-47) led wire-to-wire after grabbing the lead with a run in the second inning. The Keys pushed out to a 4-0 advantage with three runs on four hits in the fifth. The first two men in the inning reached base, and both came home after Garabez Rosa slashed a two-run double. Rosa came around to score on a Trent Mummey RBI single.
Winston-Salem (3-6, 47-31-1) cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth. David Herbek drew a two-out walk before Marcus Semien drove his eighth home run of the season into left field to make it a 4-2 game. Herbek finished the night 2-for-3 in his first start at the High-A level.
The Dash twice cut the lead to a run but could not tie the game. Brady Shoemaker singled to lead off the sixth inning and made his way to third with two outs. Cyle Hankerd drove Shoemaker in with an RBI single, and the Frederick lead was down to 4-3.
Frederick scored its final run on a misplayed ball in right field. With Ty Kelly at first, Aaron Baker ripped a low liner through the right side of the infield. The ball ricocheted off Michael Earley and Kelly scored from first to give the Keys their final tally.
Trayce Thompson doubled in the eighth and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Mike Blanke. But Winston-Salem could not muster enough offense to tie the game against Frederick closer Ryan Berry. The right-hander retired the last four batters of the game to record a save on back-to-back nights.
The Dash look to salvage the series Saturday night when right-hander Matt Heidenreich (7-2, 3.75 ERA) takes the mound. Frederick gives the ball to right-hander Kyle Simon (2-8, 3.96 ERA).
