Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
DEJA VU: The Wilmington Blue Rocks first home win of the season came as a result of a four-run inning and two errors by the opposing defense. That's exactly how the Blue Rocks pulled off their first home win of the second half as they defeated the Lynchburg Hillcats on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium, 6-5.
NORTHERN EXPOSURE: The Blue Rocks are in the midst of facing only divisional foes over a stretch of 13 straight and 17 of 20. The Rocks are 17-34 against Southern squads and 15-12 against their brothers in the North. With last night's win over Lynchburg, the Blue Crew does not have a losing record against any team in the North, but has lost more than it has won against all four teams in the South.
EXPLOSIVITY: In the first half, the Blue Rocks scored just 227 runs for a league-low 3.2 runs/game average. Despite playing two seven-inning games and being held to one run on Sunday, Wilmington has scored 45 runs over its first eight games of the second stanza for an average of 5.6 runs/game. The team that hit 31 home runs over the 70-game first half, the second-lowest total in the league, has bashed seven early in the second. The Blue Crew hit a league-worst .231 in the first half but owns a .271 contact clip so far this half.
COMEBACK KIDS: The Wilmington comeback victory was its 17th of the season. The Rocks are now 17-18 in come-from-behind ballgames. That means 53% of Wilmington's wins have seen it trail at some point.
ONE-RUN FUN: They are now 13-16 in one-run ballgames, with the 13 wins good for third in the loop. The 29 one-tally contests are the most played by any club in the circuit.
GREAT LATE: The Blue Rocks now have six wins when trailing after seven innings of play, the most in the Carolina League. Salem is the next closest team in that category with three. After scoring those four runs in the eighth inning, the Blue Rocks took the lead into the ninth. They are now 22-0 on the season when having the advantage after eight frames have been completed. Only two other CL squads, Salem (34-0) and Potomac (21-0) remain unblemished in such circumstances.
IF YOU AIN'T FIRST: Should Wilmington win tonight, with help out of town it could work its way into a four-way tie for first place in the North come tomorrow. Outside of starting each half this season at 0-0, the Blue Crew has not owned even a share of first since June 29 of last year.
HELLO SIR: Jason Adam served up two more homers on Thursday night, making for a dozen on the year. That total leads the Carolina League. He has now been struck for seven homers in his last four starts.
K.D.: Catcher Kevin David extended his modest hitting streak to three games last night. However, all three games have seen the backstop register three hits. He only had one multi-hit showing, a two-hit day, from May 19 until this current spurt. The three-game run has lifted his contact clip by 34 points (.217-.254).
WHEN IN ROME: Roman Hernandez notched two hits last night, including the first in the Rocks' eighth-inning rally. He has hit in five of his last six games, going 9-for-21 (.429) over that time. The nine-hit stretch comes after having nine base hits in total over a 19-game run from May 23-June 17 (9-for-62, .145).
THE TWITTER: Former Blue Rocks infielder Jake Kuebler (@ellskuebler) tweeted that he is "at home getting my arm in shape to get back on the bump", in regards to a possible return to baseball as a pitcher. The Lincoln (NB) H.S. graduate went 7-0 with a 0.16 ERA as a senior. He turned down an opportunity to play collegiately at Nebraska in favor of signing with the Royals as a 17th-round pick in 2008. He was released earlier this month.
