(Laredo, TX) - In the first of two games against the Laredo Bucks, the Rush were handed a 4-3 loss at the Laredo Energy Arena on Wednesday night. The Rush potted three straight powerplay goals, including two from Mike Vaskivuo, but fell to 1-1-0 on the current four-game road swing.
With a slow start, the Rush found themselves in a 2-0 hole thirteen minutes into the game. The opening goal came from defenseman Kyle Mariani who potted his third of the season at 9:26. Then at 13:02, Matt Boyd took advantage of a failed outlet by the Rush, tapping in a rebound from the top of the crease. Rapid City finally got a breath of life with a late powerplay chance which they capitalized on when Riley Weselowski sent a back-door pass to Konrad Reeder to sent in his 10th of the season, cutting the lead in half.
The beginning of the second period belonged to Rush forward Mike Vaskivuo who scored a pair of goals to give Rapid City their first lead of the game. His first came at 5:54 after a strong move to the goal mouth by Jeff Kyrzakos set up Vaskivuo for a one-timer from the low slot. Less than five minutes later, Vaskivuo struck again on the powerplay, this time roofing a wrist shot to the short side, making it a 3-2 contest. The Bucks finally stopped Rapid City momentum, receiving a goal from Justin Styffe at the 14:04 mark. One minute later, Joseph Harcharik's one-timer from the slot regained the lead for the home team, 4-3.
Despite numerous chances in the final period, including a penalty shot with 36 seconds left by Jesse Schultz, the Rush could not force overtime, losing by one tally.
