Three Points: Houston Dynamo Close Two-Game Road Trip in Philadelphia

August 10, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Houston Dynamo FC News Release

HOUSTON - The Houston Dynamo look to snap a three-game losing streak on Sunday as they face the Philadelphia Union at Talen Energy Stadium at 5 p.m. CDT.

Houston snapped a two-game scoreless streak on Thursday when MF Tommy McNamara found MF Juan David Cabezas near the penalty spot. Cabezas placed a left-footed shot inside the right post. Coming out of a 76-minute weather delay, FW Mauro Manotas entered the match to start the second half. The 23-year-old Colombian scored the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute with a beautiful strike from outside the box. Manotas' goal gave Houston a 2-1 lead that lasted six minutes as Valentín Castellanos equalized and scored the eventual game-winning goal to give Houston its third consecutive defeat.

Three new faces are expected to join the Dynamo in Philadelphia as DF Jose Bizama, FW Niko Hansen and FW Christian Ramirez report for the final 10 matches of the regular season. Bizama received his visa at the beginning of the month after signing with the team on July 11. The Chilean defender was one of three acquisitions during the secondary transfer window that addressed depth at both ends of the field.

Niko Hansen was acquired on Thursday in a trade with the Columbus Crew to provide depth specifically on the wings. Christian Ramirez was acquired in a trade with LAFC on Wednesday to provide depth up top as the U.S. Men's National Team forward brings 27 goals over four years in MLS. MF Matias Vera will not be eligible for selection due on Sunday to yellow card accumulation.

The all-time series is currently tied with six victories for each club and four draws. Houston triumphed in the last meeting between both clubs as they held the Union to a shutout en route to winning the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup 3-0 at BBVA Stadium last September. That was the first time both clubs met in the final and the first Open Cup title for the Dynamo. The Union picked up their first victory at BBVA Stadium a few months before as they defeated Houston 3-1 to win the only meeting during the regular season.

The Dynamo return to Houston on Monday as they prepare to host Tim Howard and the Colorado Rapids for Star Wars Night at 8 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 17 at BBVA Stadium.

Here are three key points ahead of Sunday's game:

GOALS ON THE ROAD - The Dynamo have scored five goals in their last two matches away from BBVA Stadium and look to maintain the trend after challenges at home in their last three matches across all competitions. Houston has only scored one goal at home in their last three outings in EaDo and look to maximize their time on the road as six of their final 10 games will be away from home. A victory on Sunday would give Houston its third triumph away from BBVA Stadium this season, the most since the 2014 MLS regular season.

ELIS RETURNS TO THE MIX - Alberth Elis will join the Dynamo in Philadelphia after serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. The Honduran international will look for his first goal since finishing with a brace in a 4-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls on July 3 at BBVA Stadium. The Union is one of seven teams that the Honduran international has not scored against and this will be the second time Elis faces the Union in league play.

PHILLY ON THE PROWL FOR TOP SEED - The Union sit at the top of the Eastern Conference after a 5-1 victory over D.C. United last Sunday. Union FW Kacper Przybylko scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season and midfielder Marco Fabian finished with a brace and tallied an assist. The Mexican international and Jamiro Monteiro have combined for 10 goals and nine assists this season as the Union cling to a three-point cushion at the top of the Eastern Conference.
