Postgame Quotes: Colorado Rapids 2, San Jose Earthquakes 1
Colorado Rapids Interim Head Coach Conor Casey
Opening statement...
"I'm just really happy for the group. It's a huge win against a very, very good team. We're all very happy. We're in a position now where we know our home games are so important to us and now be able to win the last two. Especially tonight against a good team -- such an evenly matched game -- for them to come out in the second half and really put their heads down and do their jobs. I'm just really proud of the guys."
On the lineup selection process...
"It's good right now. We have a lot of guys that are in form. They're performing well at practice and when they get their shot in the game, they're delivering. It's good right now. There's a lot of competition in all spots and they're pushing each other."
On Diego Rubio's mentality...
"He's been huge for us over the last couple of months. He's got a good run of goals going so he's confident. He's working so hard and for me that's the biggest thing. He gives you everything, he's tenacious and he's leaving it all on the field. He's in a good way right now."
Colorado Rapids Midfielder Kellyn Acosta
On tonight's performance...
"We were out looking for revenge. It was really a tail of two halves. I think our first half, we were flat. They created a lot of chances and opportunities and we weren't able to figure it out. At halftime we regrouped and came out a lot better. Defensively we were more sound, we were more connected through the midfield and we were able to create some chances. I thought the second half was a lot better for us."
On scoring tonight...
"It's definitely a monkey off of my back. I thought, at first, that the keeper pushed it wide, but it found the inside of the post and I was happy to get a goal and to get on the scoresheet. Hopefully I can keep building and keep moving forward on that front."
Colorado Rapids Defender Danny Wilson
On tonight's match...
"I think tonight we got after them a little more -- we weren't great, but we definitely got a little bit better, and managed to put ourselves in front. I think the second half was a vast improvement on the first. Even though the first half didn't go as well, we still had enough to go out and win the game. We're happy and look forward to carrying this momentum."
On playing defense tonight...
"I think we have a lot of good center backs here. Obviously it was Lalas [Abubakar] and I playing tonight because Tommy [Smith] was a little banged up, and we hope he will be back soon because he's an important player for us. I think Lalas has been great since he's joined the team. He's been great to play alongside, he talks well, and I think we complement each other well. Obviously our partnership is new -- we only played about 15 minutes with each other last weekend, but we worked together in training a little bit this week. If I'm asked to play there again come Wednesday night -- I gladly will, but if not I will get back to work and try to stay on the team."
Colorado Rapids Forward Diego Rubio
On tonight's performance...
"I always say that this is our home and we need to make it difficult for the other team, but we all know that they are a great team and a tough team. It was a tough first half for us, but in the second half we scored very important goals. So, it was a great win and now we have some away games to focus on."
On keeping his scoring streak alive...
"I just try to stay close to the goal. Some people say that when you score the first goal that the other goals are coming, but it's really just about working hard. I think in the first half we didn't work hard enough but still managed to find a goal, but in the second half we responded well and found another goal after they scored. It's really about the hard work done by everyone -- not just me, it's a team effort."
San Jose Earthquakes Head Coach MatÃ-as Almeyda
Thoughts on tonight's match...
"My thoughts are balanced. It's hard to make a fair analysis after a game. I stick with the first half managed by our team -- in the first half we could've had two or three goals easily due to some of the plays we had. I'm also realistic and I know that in soccer you win by scoring and avoiding conceding goals. The second half was a little bit more back and forth. The game ended the way it did, with few clear opportunities for the opponent, but that's respectable and everybody plays that way they want to play."
On Nick Lima's defensive performance against Colorado's Sam Nicholson...
"Good, I think he alternated between good plays on his part as well as the opponent. I hardly stick with one player, we're a group, not just one or two."
On his team's expectations for this season...
"Now we have to think about the upcoming game -- we're playing game after game. This is a team that didn't do so well last year, only on four games all year. At the beginning it was negative, but we found confidence after finding a playing style that got us to where we are today."
San Jose Earthquakes Forward Chris Wondolowski
On his missed chances during the match...
"Goals change games. If we were able to get one first I think it helps us dictate the game. Kellyn Acosta had a great finish though. I kind of played center back for a little bit, playing catch up, and we didn't quite get back to our way of playing."
On playing the Rapids at home...
"I think they're very talented. I think in the previous game we scored in the first minute and fifteenth minute I believe -- so, again, that kind of dictates the rest of the game and how things can go. It's funny how goals can change that."
On Vako's performance...
"He's playing amazing. I think he's a very talented player and he's always had the skill. You could also see that he was putting in a great shift defensively -- tracking runner, doing the little things. He's an amazing player for a reason."
