Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hooks took the opener of a three-game series 7-4 over the Arkansas Travelers on Tuesday night at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks blasted two home runs in the first inning, including the league-leading 12th of the season from SS Alex Bregman, to jump in front 3-0.
After Arkansas 2B Andrew Daniel launched his second home run of the season in the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-1, Corpus Christi added three more in the fifth against Travs starter RHP Blayne Weller (L, 2-6).
Weller worked five innings and allowed the six runs (five earned) on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. The seven K's ties a season high which Weller has reached three times.
Down 6-1 in the sixth, Arkansas scored a run and loaded the bases to bring the tying run the plate, but RF Jabari Henry struck out looking to end the threat.
Travs 3B Angel Rosa and C Stephen McGee both blasted their first home runs of the season in the loss.
Daniel finished 2-for-4 with the longball.
RHP Danny Reynolds worked two scoreless innings after Weller with three strikeouts.
Houston Astros Major Leaguer on Rehab DH Carlos Gomez played for Corpus Christi and finished 0-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a run scored.
With the loss, Arkansas fell to 18-27 on the season. The two teams will play the middle game of the three-game set on Wednesday night at Whataburger Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
