Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals brought the potential tying run to the plate in the eighth and the ninth, but the Midland RockHounds fought off the Cards for the 5-2 win before 2,594 fans at Hammons Field on Wednesday night.
Cardinals RHP Corey Baker (L, 2-2) struck out the side in the opening inning, but the one RockHound that did not strike out in the frame did some damage. With two away and no runners on in the first, 3B Matt Chapman pulled a solo shot to left field, swinging the RockHounds (24-21) in front. Baker rebounded right away with his third strikeout of the stanza, closing the opening inning with the Cardinals (24-22) only trailing, 1-0.
Baker dealt a pair of perfect innings in the second and third, but Chapman and the RockHounds struck again in the fourth. SS Yairo Munoz led off with a single, before Chapman slugged his second homer of the day, a two-run shot to left-center. The next batter, RF Tyler Marincov, followed suit with a solo home run to left field, opening the lead to 4-0.
The Cardinals got on the board against RHP Chris Jensen in the bottom of the fourth. DH Luke Voit started the inning being hit by a pitch, before racing to second on a 3B Paul DeJong single. One out later, 1B Chris Jacobs worked a walk to load the bases. After a pop out, LF C.J. McElroy, Jr. came through with an RBI infield single to score Voit from third, slicing the deficit down to 4-1.
Midland, though, got the run right back in the top of the fifth. Baker retired the frame's first batter, but then DH John Nogowski powered a solo home run to left-center field, opening the lead to 5-1.
Springfield started chipping away once again against RHP Trey Cochran-Gill in the bottom of the seventh. SS Alex Mejia sparked the bats with a leadoff double inside the left field line. Mejia moved to third on a groundout from CF Harrison Bader, before darting home on an RBI groundout by Voit, bringing Springfield within three runs, 5-2.
The Cardinals threatened in the eighth and ninth, getting two men on base and bringing the potential tying run to the plate in both frames, but the RockHounds escaped both stanzas unscathed to hang on for the 5-2 win. RHP Ben Bracewell (S, 2) dealt the scoreless ninth to log the save.
