Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - J.D. Davis and Derek Fisher drove in two runs apiece and Cy Sneed pitched five strong innings as Corpus Christi downed Arkansas 7-4 Tuesday at Whataburger Field before 4,598.
Alex Bregman's Texas League-leading 12th home run provided Sneed and the Hooks with a quick 1-0 lead. Bregman hammered Blayne Weller's 1-1, 92-mph fastball 403 feet to left.
A Fisher infield single later, it was 3-0 courtesy of Davis' eighth yard shot, a 423-foot blast just left of the batter's eye. Each of the reigning league player of the week's home runs have come in the last 17 games.
Arkansas (18-27) got on the board in the second, Andrew Daniel taking Sneed deep to left after two were out.
Fisher's two-run single highlighted a three-run fifth. James Ramsay's one-out double sparked the rally before Weller plunked Carlos Gomez and Bregman consecutively. Bregman crossed on a throwing error while evading a rundown between third and home.
The Travelers cooked up two-out trouble for Sneed during the sixth and chased him in the process. Bo Way's double preceded a single from Alex Yarbrough.
Sneed (3-1) whiffed six over 5 2/3 and yielded three hits. His pitch total was 95 (61).
Sneed's relief, Eric Peterson, then escaped a bases-loaded jam by catching Jabari Henry looking.
Weller (2-6), lifted for Danny Reynolds in the sixth, allowed six hits and five earned runs while striking out seven.
Angel Rosa added a solo home run off Peterson the next inning, and Corpus Christi (27-17) countered with Alfredo Gonzalez's two-out RBI triple in its last turn. Brendan McCurry, who worked the final two innings, picked up his league-leading eighth save despite a ninth-inning solo home run by Stephen McGee.
Fisher, Gonzalez, and Conrad Gregor posted two-hit performances for the Hooks, and Daniel had two for Arkansas.
Davis has a 12-game hitting streak and Fisher owns a seven-game run; Way's streak also reached seven.
Hooks right-hander Keegan Yuhl (2-1) faces Victor Alcantara (1-2) Wednesday at 7:05. It's Whataburger Family Day, so purchase a ticket for yourself and get your child's ticket free.
