
Three homers not enough in 16-4 loss

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (16-25) hit three home runs, but saw their losing streak was extended to four games at the hands of the St. Paul Saints (20-21) in a 16-4 loss on Friday night.
The Saints loaded the bases in the first inning on a Derrick White double, Adam Olow single, and Brian Buchanan walk. Nick Gretz doubled to score White and Olow, but Buchanan was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning. After one inning, the Saints led 2-0.
The Canaries got on the board in the third inning. Angelo Fermin tripled and scored on a single by Ralph Santana to cut St. Paul's lead in half, 2-1.
In the top of the fourth inning the Saints pulled away. Brian Sprout and Nick Gretz led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Pat Scalabrini doubled to score Sprout for a 3-1 lead. Jeremy Frost followed with a three-run blast to give the Saints a 6-1 lead. Derrick White hit a solo shot later in thee inning to putting St. Paul ahead by six, 7-1.
The Birds got one back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chad Hermansen hit his 18th homer of the season, making it 7-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Saints added two runs. With the bases loaded, Pat Scalabrini grounded into a double play to score Brian Buchanan, and Jeremy Frost followed with a double to bring home Brian Sprout. The pair of runs put St. Paul ahead, 9-2.
In each the fifth and sixth innings the Canaries scratched away at the lead with solo home runs. In the fifth it was Angelo Fermin hitting his third home run of the season and in the sixth it was Ralph Santana hitting his first homer of the year. After six innings the Canaries trailed by five, 9-4.
From there the Saints ran away with the win scoring four in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth for the 16-4 final.
Anthony Boughner (8-7) pitched seven innings to get the win for the Saints. Matt Koziara (3-4) gave up nine runs on 13 hits in 4.2 innings in the loss.
The teams will wrap-up the series on Saturday night when the Canaries will give away George Washington Bobbleheads presented by American Family Insurance. The final bobble in the Mount Rushmore Bobble Series will be given away to 1,000 random fans at the game on Saturday night.
