Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - Michael Camporeale, Jason Kanzler and Spencer Branigan all homered for the Steamers (35-16, 17-8) and Troy Scribner earned his first win at home in the Steamers 9-3 win over the Wilmington Sharks (29-21, 13-10) on Monday Night at Historic Hicks Field.
The Steamers Michael Camporeale (university of Washington) left the building in the first, Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) in the second and Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) in the fifth inning and set a new franchise record for home runs in a season as a team. Camporeale's long ball tied the record of 42 and Kanzler's home run broke it. The Steamers now sit at 44 home runs this season.
Troy Scribner (Sacred Heart University) finally got a taste of what pitching at home was like in 2012 for the Steamers. His five previous appearances were all on the road this summer. Wilmington loaded the bases against Scribner in the top of the first but he danced out of the jam unscathed and his offense rewarded him.
After an RBI single by Branigan to get the ball rolling, Camporeale followed with a solo home run, his ninth of the season. He is tied for the league lead with Ryan Cranmer of Morehead City. Wigberto Nevarez (Lubbock Christian University) then knocked in Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) for a 3-0 lead.
The Steamers never looked back from there, scoring two more runs when Kanzler went deep in the bottom of the second and one more when Branigan went deep in the fifth for a 6-0 lead.
Kanzler continued his hot hitting with a two-run single in the sixth inning and he scored when Meadows knocked him in. In the game Kanzler finished two-for-five with a home run, a single, three runs scored and four RBIs.
Wilmington scored only three times, once in top of the sixth on Scott Coleman's RBI single and twice in the top of the eighth on Connor Mitchell's two-run double.
Ross Whitley took the loss, lasting only two innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. He fell to 5-3 on the season.
Scribner earned the win in his first home start and improved to 3-1 on the season. After the shaky first inning Scribner retired 13 Sharks in a row into the top of sixth inning when he issued a walk to lead-off the frame. Scribner allowed one run (earned), one hit, two walks and five strike outs in 5.1 innings pitched.
With the win over Wilmington, the Steamers have eliminated the Sharks from contention for the second half East Division Title with two games remaining. The Steamers finished 2012 4-3 against the Sharks.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
