Wilmington Sharks News Release
Edenton, N.C. - Once again at Hicks Field, the Edenton Steamers (17-8, 35-16) wasted no time putting runs on the board against the Wilmington Sharks (13-10, 29-21) as they scored five of their runs in a 9-3 win during the first two innings.
After the Sharks left the bases loaded in the top of the first, Edenton took advantage of an error to score three unearned runs. One of the runs came on a Michael Camporeale home run, and the Steamers also had a walk, a single and a double in the frame.
Two more runs were added in the second inning, both scoring on a Jason Kanzler home run that was the team's 43rd of the season to set a new franchise record.
Spencer Branigan extended that record with yet another solo shot in the fifth, making the score 6-0 through five innings.
Wilmington finally got on the board in large part because of a pair of stolen bases by Casey Goss in the top of the sixth inning. Scott Coleman was credited with the RBI on a single up the middle.
Edenton again responded with an additional three runs in the bottom of the sixth, using two walks, three singles and a hit by pitch to bring the runners across the plate.
In their most productive frame of the night, the Sharks scored twice in the top of the eighth when Aaron Preston and Scott Coleman both scored on a double off the bat of Connor Mitchell.
Only one home game remains in the regular season, Thursday against Thomasville. The Sharks enjoy an off day on Tuesday before a suspended-game doubleheader in Morehead City on Wednesday.
