Morehead City Marlins News Release
PETERSBURG, Va. - The Morehead City Marlins (22-29 overall, 12-12 second half) took both games of a doubleheader from the Petersburg Generals (21-32 overall, 7-18 second half) by scores of 5-4 and 2-1 Monday evening at Petersburg Sports Complex.
In game one the Marlins came back on two separate occasions in the game's final two innings. In the bottom of the eighth with runners on second and third with two outs, Reed Gordy lined a single up the middle, scoring both runs and tying the game at three. Then, after Petersburg scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth to take a 4-3 lead, Morehead City walked off in wild fashion. With two outs and nobody aboard, Eric Peterson and Corey Bass worked back-to-back walks. On a full count, Geoff DeGroot grounded a ball to shortstop that Ricardo Castro misfired to first base, allowing Peterson to score from second base and Bass to score the winning run all the way from first as the Marlins took it 5-4.
The Generals scored the first run of the game in the top of the third before the Marlins countered with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame to tie it at one. The game remained 1-1 until the top of the eighth before Petersburg scored two to take a 3-1 lead, which set the stage for the first of Morehead City's two comebacks.
William Prince (3-1) picked up the win for the second straight game, allowing one run in the top of the ninth inning. The loss went to Thomas Gill (0-4) who allowed two unearned runs in the ninth inning.
In game two Marlins starting pitcher Taylor Robinson put the team on his back, going six strong innings and allowing just one unearned run on three hits without walking a batter.
In the second inning with two outs and nobody on Ryan Cranmer singled before scoring on Drew Woodall's double to the left-center field gap for a 1-0 Marlins lead. In the sixth inning, Petersburg tied the game when Gary LeClair reached on an error and scored on a double off the bat of Mike Revell to square the game at 1-1.
Then in the top of the seventh, the Marlins scored the game-winner when Chad Shannon walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from DeGroot. Chace Mitchell followed with a single and then Sam Ott reached on ground ball to second base that erased Mitchell, but the throw to first base was errant, scoring Shannon and putting the Fish on top 2-1.
Robinson (5-3) turned in his second consecutive win and third in his last four starts. Prince picked up his seventh save, tossing a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Jamie Brown (0-1) took the loss, as the only batter he faced, Shannon, scored the winning run.
The Marlins continue their road trip tomorrow when they take on the Peninsula Pilots at War Memorial Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: Game one was a continuation of Saturday's suspended game and was nine innings with Morehead City playing as the home team, while the game two was the originally scheduled game which was shortened to seven innings with Petersburg as the home team... The Marlins used six different pitchers in game one... The Marlins longest winning streak previous to this stretch was three... Game one marked the first time in four games the team allowed more than three runs... Out of the 12 total runs scored on the evening, five were unearned.
