West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - P. J. Phillips looked quite a bit like his older brother - Major Leaguer Brandon Phillips - on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. The shortstop hit his first two home runs of the season and drove in a total of four runs as Cedar Rapids routed the Whitecaps, 9-2.
Phillips hit a solo home run in the first, a two run shot in the sixth and added an RBI single in the ninth.
The Kernels posted season highs in runs and hits (17) allowed by the West Michigan pitching staff.
Lauren Gagnier allowed three home runs to tie a Whitecaps team record, which was most recently matched by Angel Castro on April 20 against Clinton. Gagnier pitched 5.1 innings with ten hits and seven runs (6 ER) allowed with no walks and one strikeout.
Designated hitter Matt Sweeney hit the other home run for the Kernels. It was a solo shot with two out in the first inning.
Tim Schoeninger tossed seven innings for Cedar Rapids and scattered seven hits to earn the victory.
The only two runs scored in the game by the Whitecaps came in the third when Jeramy Laster and Michael Bertram started the inning with back-to-back doubles, followed by a single from Brandon Timm and an RBI sacrifice fly by Gorkys Hernandez.
Timm finished 3-for-3 and is 5-for-6 in the first two games of the series.
Third baseman Santo De Leon went 0-for-4 to end a 12 game hitting streak for the Whitecaps.
