Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons got plenty of offense, then Dow Diamond got plenty of rain as they beat the Swing of the Quad Cities in front of 4,549 fans by a score of 10-4.
The game was halted in the top of the seventh inning with Swing catcher Nick Derba at the plate and two outs thanks to a sudden thunderstorm over Midland. The ballgame was delayed for close to 20 minutes before the first pitch was thrown. Midland saw heavy thunderstorms about an hour prior to game time which included a tornado warning in the Midland area. Another rain delay halted the game before the contest was called, making for a total of 52 minutes of rain stoppage in tonight's ballgame. The game itself lasted only two hours and four minutes.
Carlos Santana and Matt Berezay each connected for home runs in the contest and each drove in three runs. Centerfielder Trayvon Robinson connected shortly before the rains came for his first home run in a Great Lakes Loons uniform, breaking a homerless streak that has spanned since 8/9/06 when he played for the Gulf Coast League Dodgers.
Steven Johnson started for the Loons but wasn't able to hang around long enough to pick up the victory in pitching 3.2 innings allowing all four Swing runs. The righty was relieved by southpaw David Pfeiffer who pitched three innings of scoreless ball, picking up the victory while his record improved to 3-2.
Tyler Herron (8-5) pitched five innings and gave up seven runs while striking out nine as he picked up his fifth loss of the season. Former Central Michigan University alum Jason Cairns came on in relief and struggled allowing three runs (including the homerun to Robinson) in one inning of work.
The Swing-Loons series continues Thursday night when highly touted left-hander Clayton Kershaw will get the start for Great Lakes against 2007 first-round draft pick Clayton Mortensen. Game time is 7:05pm. Thursday night's promotion lets Loons fans to party like it's 1999! Join us in reliving all things 90's. Be sure to stay after the game for fireworks powered by Dow Corning. Brad Golder and Dan Hasty will call the action from Midland as the game will be carried in Mid-Michigan on the flagship home of Loons Baseball, Thunder Country 100.9 WYLZ.
