Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING- Summer Fun Day turned out to be anything but that for the Lansing Lugnuts Wednesday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park, as they suffered a 7-5 setback at the hands of the Burlington Bees before 5,523 fans. The win marks the fifth straight for the Bees.

Lansing nabbed the lead in the second when Jonathan Diaz delivered a two-run double into left-center field to put the Lugnuts ahead 2-0. It would be the only lead that Lansing would have in the game.

Burlington began to fight back in the third when Jesus Soto hit the first of two solo homers for the Bees to make it 2-1. Brady Everett's blast to left in the fourth tied the game at 2-2.

The visitors were able to grab the lead in the fifth by taking advantage of a a walk, a single, and an intentional walk that loaded the bases with one out. Joe Dickerson then grounded a ball to Lansing third baseman Josh Bell, who had trouble with it and had to settle for the force out at third. The fielder's choice scored a run to put Burlington ahead 3-2. After Everett walked to reload the bases, Michael Thompson was hit by a pitch to plate another run and push the lead to 4-2.

Lansing closed the gap to one run in the seventh on an RBI groundout. The two teams then traded two-run innings in the eighth before the Bees were finally able to salt the game away in the ninth with an insurance run via a Kurt Mertins RBI single.

Jason Godin (3-1) pitched well for the Bees while notching the win. He threw seven innings and allowed just three runs on six hits while fanning six.

Nate Starner (8-8) started the game on fire for Lansing, as he retired the first six batters on strikeouts. He then struggled after that, lasting just 4 2/3 innings while giving up four runs on as many hits.

Chris Hayes got his eighth save.

Lansing (49-45, 14-11) and Burlington (45-49, 15-10) will continue the series on Thursday night. Graham Godfrey (5-4, 4.55) will make the start for the Lugnuts, while Mario Santiago (1-6, 2.89) will get the call for the Bees.
