Thorns FC's Sam Coffey Named to NWSL Best XI for September/October
October 18, 2023 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Portland Thorns FC News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. -The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) today announced that Portland Thorns FC midfielder Sam Coffey was named to the NWSL Best XI of the Month, presented by Mastercard, for the period of September/October. It marks the third time this season Coffey has earned Best XI of the Month honors.
The Thorns FC midfielder started and played every minute of the team's five matches, tallying one assist during that span. The assist came on the game-winning goal against NJ/NY Gotham FC on Oct. 7, which helped Portland secure a playoff berth and a top-two seed with the victory. It was Coffey's league-leading eighth assist of the campaign, which ranks as the second-most in a single season in club history. Notably, she set up goals for seven different players in 2023 - the most different teammates any player has assisted in a single season in league history.
The NWSL Best XI of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis, and the NWSL's on-air broadcast talent.
