Mississippi Braves News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons did something on Thursday night that very few teams have been able to do in 2014, building up an early lead on All-Star starter Williams Perez en route to a 5-1 win over the Mississippi Braves at Regions Field.
The Barons (4-3; 33-44) struck for all five runs in the first four innings off Perez (3-4), who allowed a season-high runs (5), hits (7), and walks (3) in the loss.
Birmingham started the scoring in the first frame. Jared Mitchell drew a leadoff walk, and was almost picked off when Perez balked him to second. Trayce Thompson hit a two-run homer off the top of the wall in center, his seventh of the season to put the Barons up 2-0.
The deficit grew with a run in the third when Luis Sierra doubled, moving to third on a Josh Richmond groundout. Former Brave Jaime Pedroza drove him in with an unassisted groundout to first for a 3-0 lead.
The Barons struck for their final blow with a two-run fourth frame. Richmond singled and took second on a balk, and Pedroza bunted for a base hit to put men at the corners. Mitchell lined a ball to deep left field for a sacrifice fly and a 4-0 lead. Rangel Ravelo singled to left to plate Pedroza and grow it to 5-0.
Mississippi's bullpen came on and worked four brilliant one-hit innings, with two perfect frames for Brandon Cunniff and scoreless frames for Cody Fassold and Ryan Kelly.
The Braves (4-4, 43-34) were stifled by David Cales (2-0), who picked up a win in a spot start for Chris Beck, promoted to triple-A on Thursday morning. Cales fired five shutout innings on three hits, striking out two in just his fourth career start. Jarrett Casey picked up a four-inning save, his first, allowing a run on two hits.
Seth Loman provided the only run for the Braves in the sixth when he blasted an 0-2 pitch over the right-centerfield wall, his 11th home run and his second in as many days against his former team to pull it to 5-1 Barons.
The M-Braves will try to even the series in Friday night's fourth of five games, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM CT in Birmingham. Right-hander JR Graham (1-3, 5.18) gets the start for the Braves against Barons righty Myles Jaye (0-7, 6.66).
Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM CT on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
