Thomas named defensive player of the week

SAN JOSE, Calif. (April 18, 2006) - Two-time Arena Football League Defensive Player of the Year Clevan Thomas was today named the AFL's ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his effort in San Jose's win over Western Division rival Las Vegas on April 14.
Now in his fifth AFL season, Thomas intercepted his fifth pass of the year, and 30th of his career, on the Gladiators' first offensive play leading to a San Jose touchdown. Thomas also added a pair of pass breakups, a fumble recovery and career-high 10.0 tackles as the SaberCats posted their third straight win, 69-59, and moved ahead of the Gladiators in the division standings.
"I'd take the win rather than getting the award," said Thomas after learning of his selection. "So if you get both I guess that is something good so I appreciate it."
Thomas won a league weekly award for the third time in his career and earned the defensive honor for the second time. He joins WR/DB Charles Pauley, who won Ironman honors in Week 3, and OS Ben Nelson, who earned Offensive accolades in Week 10, as SaberCats to win AFL weekly awards during the 2006 season.
The SaberCats look for their 4th straight win when they host the Austin Wranglers in the first-ever meeting between the clubs on Saturday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available and can be purchased through any Northern California Ticketmaster outlet, online at ticketmaster.com or at the HP Pavilion box office.
