Series Streaks: The Destroyers have won two straight games against the Soul, dating back to the end of the 2005 season. The win on May 15, 2005, snapped a three-game win streak for Philadelphia.
Coaches: Columbus, Doug Kay, first season in Columbus, fourth overall (5-7, 21-36 overall).
Philadelphia, Bret Munsey, first season (4-3, 4-3 overall).

OVERVIEW: The Columbus Destroyers are desperately in need of a win heading into tonight's game. As a matter of fact, the Destroyers will probably need to win out in order to make the playoffs.

The Destroyers beat the Soul, who would be in the playoffs as the fourth seed, earlier this season, 53-20. The 20 points was the fewest scored in franchise history by the Soul, who have gone 3-1 since the loss.

The Soul will be without the services of veteran quarterback Tony Graziani, who suffered a torn hamstring in Week 11 against the Chicago Rush. Calling the signals for the Soul now is Matt Sauk, who guided the Soul to a win this past weekend in Nashville.

Columbus defensive specialist Jerald Brown will look to add to his League-leading nine interceptions. Brown intercepted his ninth pass of the season this past weekend against New York. The interception also set a Destroyers single-season record.

- Give the Destroyers a 3-3 record against the Soul

DESTROYERS Last Week
New York Dragons 64
Columbus Destroyers 57
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Destroyers defensive specialist Jerald Brown intercepted a league-high ninth interception, which set a Destroyers' single season record, but it was not enough as Columbus fell to New York 64-57 in front of 10,306 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena Friday night. Brown earned Defensive Player of the Game honors. Brown recorded four tackles (4 solo), one interception and one pass breakup.

With the score knotted at 57-57, the Dragons worked down the field and scored with 21 seconds remaining when quarterback Nick Browder found Horacek from 30 yards out to give New York a 64-57 lead. Browder finished the night completing 31-of-46 passes for 387 yards and seven touchdowns and only one interception.

The Destroyers opened the contest playing near-perfect football. Quarterback John Kaleo completed his first four passes for 39 yards on four plays as the Destroyers marched to the 1-yard line, where fullback/linebacker Leroy Thomas bulldozed his way into the endzone for the first score of the game. Following a New York touchdown, Barre would return the kickoff 48 yards to the Dragons 2-yard line, where kicker Mark Lewis would convert a league's second best 13th field goal of the season.

Following a New York touchdown, Kaleo connected with wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders from 32-yards out, as the Destroyers reclaimed the lead at 17-13. Fullback/linebacker Harold Wells would then add a touchdown of his own, rushing in from a yard out. Columbus and New York would end the half exchanging field goal as the Destroyers entered halftime with a 27-16 lead.

Angered by two consecutive New York touchdowns, Columbus returned to the following kick off 34 yards. With excellent field position, Kaleo found a wide-open wide receiver/linebacker Marcus Knight for a 16-yard touchdown, ending the third quarter with 41-37 Columbus lead.

Columbus and New York spent the fourth quarter exchanging touchdowns. After a New York touchdown, Columbus reclaimed the lead for the fourth time when Kaleo and Levy connected for a 21-yard touchdown. New York returned with a touchdown of their own, as they took a 50-48 lead. However, a fumbled snap on the extra point was returned by Brown for two points and a 50-50 tie. The Destroyers had a chance on the ensuing possession, but a 46-yard field goal attempt by kicker Mark Lewis sailed just wide of the uprights.
THIS WEEK's OPPONENT
The Philadelphia Soul, most notably known for majority owner Jon Bon Jovi, was approved to join the Arena Football League on July 10, 2003. Less than a year later, the Soul took the field for the first time in a Feb. 8, 2004, battle against the New Orleans VooDoo. The Soul lost the game 42-34.

This season, the Soul is 7-5 and sitting in the fourth spot, should the playoffs start today. The Soul does not have much of a hold on the spot as there are two other teams who have the same 7-5 record.

Normally under center for the Soul would be AFL veteran Tony Graziani, but the seventh-year vet suffered a torn hamstring in Week 11 against the Chicago Rush.

The Soul will welcome home wide receiver/defensive back Marcus Knight. The 2006 season started with Knight in a Soul uniform and through six games of the season, he was the teams leading receiver. Knight was released, and then picked up by the Destroyers. Friday will mark his first game against his former team.

LAST MEETING WITH PHILADELPHIA

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Destroyers defense forced four Philadelphia Soul turnovers in a 53-20 rout in front of 12,807 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena on Saturday night. The 20 points allowed by the Destroyers defense was the second fewest in franchise history and fewest since the team moved to Columbus in 2004. The lowest came on Feb. 9, 2003, when the Destroyers topped Carolina 44-16.

Destroyers quarterback John Kaleo must have been closely watching the NCAA basketball tournament the last few days as he looked like a point guard distributing the ball to eight different receivers. Kaleo was sharp connecting on 26-of-34 attempts for 302 yards and 5 touchdown passes. It was the third consecutive game that Kaleo has passed for over 300 yards.

Wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders took home Ironman of the Game honors after hauling in seven passes for 100 yards and two scores. Defensively, Saunders added two fumble recoveries and 1.5 tackles.

The Destroyers took control when Tony Graziani's screen pass to Sean Scott was juggled and tossed into the hands of Destroyers' defensive specialist Jerald Brown for his team leading sixth interception of the season. Brown didn't stop there. He carried the ball a short 3-yards for the score extending Columbus' lead to 20-10. Brown would later add his seventh interception of the season to be named Defensive Player of the game. It was the third time this season that he had two interceptions in a game.

DESTROYERS NOTABLES

DROP BACK
Columbus Destroyers' defensive specialist Jerald Brown intercepted his ninth pass of the season, a new Destroyers single-season record, but it was not enough, as Columbus fell 64-57 to Eastern Division rival New York in front of 10,306 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena Friday night. Brown took home ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors after he recorded four tackles (all solo), had the interception and broke up a pass. Defensive specialist Cecil Doggette added a game-high 10.5 tackles (10UT-1AT). Destroyers' offensive specialist Darcey Levy caught five passes for 92 yards and pair of scores. Fullback/linebackers Harold Wells and Leroy Thompson, as well as wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre all added a rushing touchdown on the night.

FORWARD MOTION
The Destroyers stay on the road for the second of back-to-back road tests when they travel to take on the Austin Wranglers (8-4) on Saturday, Apr. 29. Kickoff at the Frank Erwin Center is set for 8 p.m. The teams have met once in history, with the Wranglers snaring a 58-55 victory at Nationwide Arena on Apr. 30, 2005. Wranglers' kicker Todd Sievers kicked a 22-yard field goal as time expired to give Austin the win.

HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Destroyers hired Doug Kay as head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay also has coached the Charlotte Rage (1995) and the Carolina Cobras (2000-01). Through 12 games of the 2006 season, Kay has guided the Destroyers to a 5-7 record.

BRET MUNSEY: In his first season as the head coach of the Philadelphia Soul, Bret Munsey has gotten the Soul off to a 4-3 start and right in the thick of the Eastern Division battle. Munsey, who is in his first head coaching gig, joins the Soul after spending the previous three seasons with the Orlando Predators. He also has coached the Carolina Cobras (AFL) and Tennessee Valley Vipers (af2) and began his coaching career with the Augusta Stallions (af2) in 2000. That season as the defensive coordinator, he helped guide the Stallions to a 13-3 record and an American Conference championship. Munsey played in one AFL game in 1991 for Orlando.

RECORD BROKEN
Columbus defensive specialist Jerald Brown set a Destroyers single-season record this past Friday night when he intercepted a pass in the first quarter. It was Brown's ninth of the season, which breaks the previous record set by Dwaine Carpenter, who intercepted eight passes in the 2003 campaign. Brown was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game for his performance. He has intercepted two passes in a game on three occasions and intercepted a pass in six of the Destroyers' 12 games. His nine interceptions are tied for tops in the Arena Football League. He is on pace for 12, which would rank as second-best in AFL history. Brown also has been a force elsewhere, as he has recorded 47.0 tackles (39UT-16AT), nine pass breakups and a fumble recovery returned 40 yards for a touchdown.

BARRE BECOMES BIG RETURN MAN
Wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre has been an effective player for the Destroyers this season, his rookie campaign. But where Barre has excelled at the most has been on the return. This past weekend against New York, Barre returned eight kickoffs for a total of 206 yards. This one week after Barre returned five kickoffs 119 yards. Barre came within four yards of returning a kickoff for a touchdown this past weekend, which would have been the first of the season for any Destroyers player. On the season, Barre has returned 31 kickoffs for a total of 665 yards. His average of 21.5 yards per return ranks fourth in the AFL. Offensively, Barre has caught 23 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns, while adding two rushing touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, he has recorded 39.0 tackles (33UT-12AT), one tackle for loss, two interceptions, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

EIGHT IS JUST AS GREAT
Destroyers' wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders defies the word consistent on a weekly basis. In his past eight games, Saunders has caught at least one touchdown pass. In this past Friday's loss to the New York Dragons, Saunders caught three passes for 50 yards and a score. In the past two weeks, Saunders has jumped to the top of the Destroyers receiving chart, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. For the season, Saunders has 51 receptions for 596 yards and 13 touchdowns.

KICKER GETS HIS KICKS
Even with a nagging injury to his kicking foot, kicker Mark Lewis has continued to be consistent lately. This past weekend against New York, Lewis drilled all seven of his extra point attempts. Lewis has now made 27 consecutive extra points. Lewis also added a pair of field goals on the night as well. He connected from 16 and 45 yards out. On the season, Lewis has made 45-of-48 extra points and 14-of-23 field goals. He is tied for second in field goals made and is second in the League in extra point kicking percentage at 93.8 percent.
THE PLAYOFF RACE HAS STARTED
With four games remaining in the 2006 season, each and every game becomes more and more important, especially in the National Conference. Two of the nine teams have identical 8-5 records and three others are tied with records of 7-5. The two division winners receive a first-round bye with the third seed hosting the sixth seed and the fourth seed hosting the fifth seed in the Wild Card Round. If the playoffs were to start today, the Destroyers would miss the playoffs by two games. Below is the National Conference playoff picture through Week 12. The "y" indicates if the team has clinched a playoff spot.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE
1. y-Dallas 10-2
2. Orlando 8-4

3. Austin 8-4

JUST ONE MORE WIN
The Destroyers are knocking on a franchise record's door. With five games left in the season, the Destroyers only are one win away from tying a franchise record for wins in a season. At 5-7, the Destroyers need one more win to tie and two wins to break the franchise record of six wins set by the 2001 and 2002 Buffalo Destroyers and 2004 Columbus Destroyers.

CLOSE, BUT NOT CLOSE ENOUGH
In the game of Arena Football, a lot of times, games are decided by a narrow margin. Until this past two weekends that had not been the case with the Columbus Destroyers this season. Through their first 10 games, the Destroyers had not had a game decided by 10 points or fewer. What made that stat even stranger is that every other team in the League has played in at least three games decided by 10 points or fewer. Two weekends ago against Orlando, the Predators led 39-29 with less than a minute to go, but Destroyers quarterback John Kaleo connected with wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders with 2.5 seconds remaining to cut the lead to three. An onside kick attempt failed and the Predators ran out the clock to seal the win. This past weekend against the New York Dragons, the Destroyers and Dragons were all knotted up at 57-57 with 1 minute, 44 seconds remaining in the game. The Dragons scored with 0:21 left, and then got a defensive stop with less than 0:10 remaining to hand the Destroyers their second straight close loss.
GIVE US THE DARN BALL
The Destroyers defense continues to force turnovers, as the team has shut down opposing offenses as of late. The reason for their success might have to deal with the fact that the team is forcing turnovers at an alarming rate. The Destroyers have forced a League-best 33 turnovers on the season. Of the turnovers, 16 have come by way of interceptions, while adding 17 fumble recoveries. The Destroyers are tied for second in the League in fumbles recovered and are tied for fourth in interceptions. On the flip side, the Destroyers have turned the ball over 26 times, giving them a plus-7 mark in the turnover margin category. That ranks them second in the AFL behind Dallas, who has forced 32 turnovers and turned the ball over 21 times on the season.

CLOSING IN ON THE RECORD
As the Destroyers hit the final four regular season games of the 2006 campaign, different players are closing in or have set a Destroyers' single-season record. Quarterback John Kaleo is within reach of a few passing records. Kaleo is on pace to crush the record for passes attempted. Jim Kubiak set the record in 2001 with 484 attempts, but Kaleo is on pace to attempt 512 passes. He has attempted 384 passes so far this season. Kaleo also is on pace to set the season record for pass completions. Kubiak holds the current mark of 295, but Kaleo is not far behind, completing 226 passes already this season. He is on pace to complete 301 passes.

Flipping to the defensive side of the ball, fumbles forced and fumbles recovered is a popular record that has fell or is falling this season. Brandon Hefflin forced three fumbles in 2005, only to have that mark tied this season by Ken Jones. The record is not that safe, however. B.J. Barre and Kelvin Kinney both have two forced fumbles to their credit. If that record isn't jumbled enough, fumbles recovered is even more jumbled. Hefflin and Chris Pope recovered two fumbles in 2005, but six players have recovered two fumbles this season for the Destroyers. Hefflin, Harold Wells, David Saunders, Thabiti Davis, Leroy Thompson and Eddie Galles all have tied the mark.

The record for sacks in a season is 5.5, set by Kerwin Hairston in 2001. Kinney and Jones are both hot on the trail of Hairston. Jones currently has 4.0 sacks while Kinney has 3.5. Jerald Brown set the interception record for the season, but also has broken the interception return yards record with 133 return yards this season.

FAMILIAR FACES
When the Destroyers and Soul hit the field tonight, a familiar face will be across the bench from them. Soul offensive coordinator Jim Kubiak played for the Buffalo Destroyers in 2001. Kubiak ranks second on the Destroyers career list in attempts (484), completions (295), yards (3,787) and touchdowns (64). His 270.5 yards per game average has him atop the Destroyers all-time career list. He also rushed for three touchdowns that season, while leading the Destroyers to a 6-8 record.
