Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Cody Glass and Skyler McKenzie each collected four point games to help the Portland Winterhawks sneak by the Everett Silvertips, 6-5 before 4,432 fans at XFINITY Arena on Friday in WHL action.
The loss for the Silvertips spoiled a four assist night for defenseman Aaron Irving, reaching a new career high for points in one game while setting a new Silvertips high for assists in a game this season. Portland, who didn't arrive into Everett until 6:45 p.m. (delaying the start time to 8:00 p.m.) due to travel circumstances, extended their win streak to six straight games, while the Silvertips slipped to seven straight games without a win.
The crazy first period began on Brad Ginnell scoring on the first shot of the game just 1:14 into the game but the Silvertips responded with back to back goals, starting on Bryce Kindopp's rebound goal at 3:48 for a 1-1 tie.
At 5:21, Riley Sutter parked a rebound for a 2-1 lead, after Irving's point shot glanced off Eetu Tuulola and goaltender Cole Kehler. Portland tied the game on Skyler McKenzie's blast from the half boards, searing through traffic at 17:51.
Cody Glass buried his 24th goal of the season just 30 seconds into the second period to restore Portland's lead at 3-2, but on a delayed penalty, Devon Skoleski re-directed Aaron Irving's sharp-angled shot at 3:17 for a 3-3 tie.
Back to back Portland goals bumped their lead to 4-3 when Ryan Hughes parked a backdoor feed at the left post at 5:54 and McKenzie finished Glass' centering pass from between the circles at 8:37.
Sean Richards provided pushback when he buried rebound after Kehler stopped Eetu Tuulola on a breakaway, at 14:54 to cut the deficit to 5-4. But McKenzie found Joachim Blichfeld streaking to the right post with 2.8 left in the period, giving Portland a 6-4 edge.
Dominic Zwerger stashed his 22nd goal at the top of the crease to slice the Tips deficit to 6-5 at 13:15, on a set up from Patrick Bajkov and the Tips threatened on a late two on one, but Kehler stopped a Bajkov to Zwerger two-on-one just moments later.
Portland withstood the Silvertips barrage in the final two minutes of play and Kehler picked up the win with 34 saves. Carter Hart, making seven saves in 24 minutes of play, was replaced by Mario Petit who took the loss on 15 saves.
