San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions clinched their sixth series victory on Sunday afternoon. With a strong performance from Reggie Lawson, and some early run support from the offense, the Missions claimed their third consecutive win and win number 30 on the year. Corpus Christi never gave up and had chances to win the game late. However, the Missions defense came up clutch with a game-ending double play. The Missions win by a final score of 5-3.
It was a rematch of game one as Reggie Lawson faced off against Jimmy Endersby. Both pitchers had eventful first innings. Endersby walked Hollis to start the game and Hollis stole second base. He recovered to leave Hollis stranded. Lawson allowed a lead-off walk as well. He struck out the next two batters and then Chandler Seagle picked off Wilyer Abreu to end the inning.
The Missions capitalized on a scoring opportunity in the top of the second inning. They loaded the bases after a single from Juan Zabala, and walks to Seagle and Ripken Reyes. For Zabala, he has reached base safely in all six games of the series. All three runs scored as Hollis reached base on a throwing error from Bryan Arias. The Missions took a 3-0 lead.
San Antonio added an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning. With Endersby still on the mound, Ripken Reyes was hit by a pitch with one out. Hollis hit a double which advanced Reyes to third base. He came around to score on a wild pitch from Endersby. The Missions lead improved to 4-0.
Meanwhile, Lawson was dominating the Hooks offense and at what point struck out five consecutive batters in the second and third innings. Through four innings, he allowed two walks and struck out eight batters.
It was an eventful bottom of the fifth inning for Lawson and the Missions as the Hooks loaded the bases. Bryan Arias ended Lawson's no-hit bid with a lead-off single. Will Wagner and Edwin Diaz both drew walks to load the bases. With the bases loaded and two outs, Phillip Wellman made the choice to bring in Tom Cosgrove to face Abreu. Cosgrove struck out Abreu to end the inning and keep the 4-0 lead.
For Lawson, he finished the day with nine strikeouts. This was the most strikeouts for Lawson since he struck out nine batters on April 26th, 2019.
The Missions added their fifth run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Facing Derek West, Hollis hit a single and Alarcon hit a double. Leyba drove in Hollis with a single to left field.
Cosgrove struck out four batters in 1.2 innings of work. He was replaced by Mason Fox during the seventh inning. The right-hander retired the final two batters of the inning to keep the shutout alive.
The Corpus Christi offense came to life in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored three runs on five hits. Edwin Diaz started off the inning with a solo homer off of Fox. He then allowed a single to Abreu before recording the first out of the inning. Fox then allowed a two-run homer to Yainer Diaz. Fox was replaced by Angel Felipe after allowing his fourth hit of the inning. Felipe loaded the bases after walking Wagner and allowing a single Shay Whitcomb. He struck out Brewer to end the inning. The Missions lead was 5-3.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Corpus Christi placed two runners on base with a chance to win the game. After recording the first out of the inning, Felipe walked Abreu and gave up a base hit to Luke Berryhill. With the game-winning run at the plate, Yainer Diaz grounded into a double play to end the game.
