Third Period Goals Doom Titans; Fall to Reading, 3-2

Trenton, NJ - The Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell at home to Reading on Saturday night, 3-2, despite jumping out to an early two-goal lead.

The Royals (23-7-1-1, 48 pts) also came from behind to take the weekend series, winning Friday (5-4) and Saturday to steal two-of-three games against the Titans (14-13-2-2, 32 pts) in a three-games-in-three nights,home-home-and home set.

The Titans came out firing, and took the lead just 16 seconds in when Stephen Schultz beat Philipp Grubauer (18-4-1, 23 saves) on the first shot of the game. Schultz's line mates Kelly Zajac and Jacob Cepis earned assists on the play.

Schultz lit the lamp again at 2:37 of the first, putting a rebound into the open net with Grubauer down from the initial save. Schultz's second of the game (13th of the season) was also assisted by Zajac and Cepis.

The teams skated a scoreless 17:18 to end the first, and neither could find the back of the net in the second.

The third period was all Reading, and Denny Urban finally sparked the Royal offense, breaking up a shutout bid from Scott Wedgewood (10-8-2, 37 saves) with an unassisted tally at the 2:39 mark of the third. Reading's Ian O'Connor would pull the visitors even minutes later, and Yannick Tifu netted the game winner with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

Trenton is now 3-6-0-1 against Reading on the season, and remain in third place in the Atlantic Division, sitting behind Wheeling by virtue of a tie breaker despite the teams each having 32 points.

Reading outshot Trenton, 40-25, and both teams were perfect on the penalty kill as both power play units were held scoreless on three opportunities each. The Titans did add their successful kills to their streak against Reading, and have now shut out the Royals on 36 consecutive power play opportunities.

The teams now get a two-week break from each other, and will meet next on January 16th in Trenton.

After the new year, the Titans will head to Wheeling for two divisional games against the Nailers, January 4th and 5th, at 7:05 pm, with a Sunday tilt on the 6th in Elmira (4:05 pm) before returning home to host South Carolina in back-to-back games January 11th and 12th.
