Boise, Idaho - Marty Flichel tallied the game-winning goal in the third period, as the Steelheads scored three times in the final stanza to break open a tie game, winning 4-2 over the Stockton Thunder in front of 3,692 fans at Qwest Arena on Wednesday night.
The victory moves the Steelheads seven points in front of the Utah Grizzlies for third place in the West division standings. The Steelheads, who have just 10 games left in the regular season, improve to 4-0-0 against the Thunder.
The Steelheads (35-20-7) third period explosion got started just 34 seconds into the frame, as Mike Adamek buried a shot from the left side of the crease for his first professional goal. Adamek took a feed from Jeremy Mylymok and beat a sprawled out Jake Moreland (33 saves) to give him a two-game scoring streak (1g, 1a). Defenseman Jarad Bourassa also got an assist on the marker that put the Steelheads in front for the first time in the contest.
Then Marty Flichel scored for the second straight night, lifting a shot into the top corner over Moreland for his 24th goal of the season. The goal came on the power play at 4:53, and turned out to be the difference, as it put the Steelheads in front, 3-1. Moments later, rookie Dan Hacker netted a power play goal to put the Steelheads in front 4-1 at 6:38 of the third. D'Arcy McConvey and David Bararuk assisted on both Flichel and Hacker's power play goals.
The Thunder (13-36-11) cut the lead to 4-2 midway through the third period on Nathan Martz's 15th of the year. Lance Monych and Dean Stork got the assists on Martz's seventh point against the Steelheads this season.
The visitors led 1-0 on a goal at 2:24 of the first period, as Ned Havern tallied a power play goal to give the Thunder their first opening period goal of the season series. Havern tipped a point shot by defenseman Dean Stork over the shoulder of Steelheads' goaltender Matt Yeats (16 saves) to give the Thunder the early advantage. Jeff Lang also drew an assist on Havern's 16th of the year.
With only five seconds remaining in the opening period, the Steelheads tied the game on the man advantage, which was mired in a three-for-28 slump. Tyler Kindle sent a long outlet pass from the front of the Steelheads' net to the Thunder blue line, where Bararuk redirected the puck over to Hacker. Hacker's raced into the zone and his offering from the slot was stopped by Moreland, but McConvey followed up the play and sent the rebound into the top shelf. McConvey's 29th of the season and third of the series made the score 1-1.
There was no scoring in the second period, as the Steelheads out-shot the Thunder 8-5. Through 40 minutes, the shots were 23-11 in favor of the home team.
Bararuk, McConvey and Hacker all had multiple point efforts, as the Steelheads won their fifth straight on home ice. For the game, the shots were 37-18 in favor of the Steelheads. The Steelheads went three-for-eight on the power play, while the Thunder were one-for-four.
With the win, Yeats records his 17th win overall and his eighth in his last 13 starts. Moreland drops to 10-16-7.

All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck.
