Third Inning Overwhelms Frederick

August 8, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

Just as the Keys had posted a three-run top of the third inning to seemingly take charge on Monday night, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans stormed back. Myrtle Beach had the first seven batters reach base in a 12-batter, eight-run third inning that left the Keys behind in an 11-5 loss.

The Keys who had not allowed eight runs or more entering their current trip in the second half have done so in three of the last four nights. After a winning streak of 15 in 18 games, the Keys have dropped five of the last six.

For a second straight game a Keys starter could not go five innings. Returning to Frederick was LHP Rick Zagone who could not get out of the marathon third inning. Defense was of no help as the Keys committed three errors in the frame. Four of the eight runs were unearned.

The Keys took the early lead when SS Manny Machado homered into the bleachers down the left-field line. In the third inning 2B Jonathan Schoop did the same with a blast to left-field that cleared the bleachers. For each it was their third home run as a Key. At the plate both CF Miguel Abreu and C Brian Ward had multi-hit games.

The Keys will look to break out of its recent lapse in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday, August 8th at 7:05 p.m. On the hill will be LHP Nick Haughian. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to first pitch on 1450-AM The Source.

Frederick returns home to face Winston-Salem for a weekend four-game series beginning Thursday, August 11th. Friday, the 12th will be Fritos Family Friday with Wrestling Great Jerry "The King" Lawler in attendance signing autographs throughout the game for free.
