Pelicans Game Notes

August 8, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LHP Rick Zagone (2-0, 0.00) at RHP Justin Grimm (3-2, 3.44)

MORE WEEKLY HARDWARE: Miguel De Los Santos threw seven hitless innings in a win on Saturday and was rewarded with Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday. The southpaw walked the first two Potomac batters of the game, but bounced back to retire the next 21 batters, ten on strikes. After hitting his mid-90s pitch count, De Los Santos was removed with the no-hitter intact. Zach Osborne set down the first four batters he faced, but allowed the game's only hit with two outs to go for the franchise's second no-hitter. De Los Santos is the fourth Pelicans' hurler to earn the weekly award in 2011. Robbie Erlin (April 25-May 1), Joe Wieland (May 2-May 8 and May 23-29) and Robbie Ross (June 20-26) all took home the hardware earlier this year. Including the other weekly award, Miguel is the seventh Pelican to be honored, as Mike Olt (April 8-17), Ryan Strausborger (April 25-May 1) and Jared Bolden (July 11-17) have been named Player of the Week.

LEUR-E-E-E: Leury Garcia had a nightmarish couple of innings last night at shortstop. A seventh-inning fielding error opened the door for Potomac to score two unearned runs to increase their lead to 5-2 and in the eighth, back-to-back fielding errors started another two-run rally that put the game away. The 20-year-old switch-hitter has showed flashes of brilliance in the field, showing excellent range and a cannon for an arm, but he has committed 32 errors this season, the most in the Carolina League.

BAD SLIDE: Sunday's loss sent the Pelicans to their third straight series loss. They've dropped six of their last eight and ten of their last 15. Myrtle Beach has lost eight of their past 11 series dating back to the beginning of July.

LOOK TO THE FUTURE: The Pelicans square off tonight against the Frederick Keys, who boast the Carolina League's best record (67-44) and two players that took part in the Futures Game during the MLB All-Star festivities in Phoenix on July 10. Myrtle Beach has already seen 2B Jonathan Schoop, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in two games at BB&T Coastal Field in June. But making his first visit to the Grand Strand for this series is SS Manny Machado, who Baseball America rated as the top overall prospect in the Orioles' farm system before the season. The standout 19-year-old went 3-for-11 in the Keys' three-game sweep of the Pelicans in Frederick two weeks ago.
