Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - In a matchup of the Carolina League's first-half division champions, the Myrtle Beach rode an eight-run third inning to an 11-5 victory over the Frederick Keys on Monday at BB&T Coastal Field. With ten hits on the night, the Pelicans equaled their three-game total from when they were swept by the Keys in Frederick last month. David Paisano led the way with four RBIs.

The two teams traded solo homers early on, with Manny Machado belting a first-inning homer off Birds starter Barret Loux to put the Keys ahead before Vinny DiFazio tied the game in the second with a long ball off Keys starter Rick Zagone.

Frederick opened up a 4-1 lead with three runs in the third inning. Jonathan Schoop started the rally with a leadoff home run and the Keys tacked on with a Dale Mollenhauer RBI double and a Brian Ward sacrifice fly.

The Pelicans roared back in the bottom half of the inning, sending 12 men to the plate as they scored eight runs in the frame to set a new season high. Jared Bolden had both a run-scoring single and an RBI double in the frame, and both Paisano and Jared Prince hit two-run doubles. The rally was aided by three errors by the Keys, who entered the night as the Carolina League's best defensive team.

Paisano pushed Myrtle Beach into double-digits with a two-run single in the sixth. His four-RBI night helped the Birds get past the ten-run mark for the first time since a 10-1 home win over Wilmington on July 18. He was one of three Pelicans with two hits, along with Bolden and Prince.

Loux only lasted three innings after allowing four runs on six hits, so it was the bullpen that carried the load for Myrtle Beach. Kasey Kiker (3-2) worked two and two-thirds of one-run ball to record the win and Ryan Kelly followed with two and one-third hitless frames to get through the eighth. Colby Killian finished the job with a 1-2-3 ninth, ending the game with two strikeouts.

Zagone (2-1) took the loss for Frederick in his first game since being transferred to the Keys from Double-A Bowie on Friday. The lefty was knocked out during the messy third inning after allowing eight runs, five earned, on six hits. Justin Moore worked three and one-third innings out of the bullpen and gave up three runs, two earned, before Ryan O'Shea finished the game with two and a third scoreless frames.

The middle game of the series is set for Tuesday night with right-hander Justin Grimm (3-2, 3.44) on the hill for the Pelicans against Keys lefty Nick Haughian (8-5, 3.44). First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games, including the postseason, are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
