Ian Gac Named CL "Player of the Week"

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 8, 2011) - The Winston-Salem Dash are proud to announce that first baseman Ian Gac has been named the Carolina League "Player of the Week" for the week of August 1 - 7. This is the first time Gac has been honored with this award in 2011 and the third time a Dash player has earned league-wide honors.
For the week, Gac hit .450 (9 for 20) with a double, three home runs, four runs batted in, eight runs scored, and five walks. After ending a season-long ten-game homerless drought on Friday night with a solo shot against the Frederick Keys, the Seattle native hit two solo home runs on Sunday in the Dash's 8-0 win.
This season, Gac is hitting .278 with 30 home runs and 82 runs batted in. His 30 homers lead the Carolina League and all active minor league players (Paul Goldschmidt also has 30, but is now playing in the major leagues). Among Carolina League leaders, Gac also ranks seventh in batting average, first in RBI, third in hits (115), tied for second in doubles (28), first in slugging percentage (.563), second in extra-base hits (58), first in runs scored (76), first in total bases (233), first in games played (111), and first in at bats (414).
Gac, who has hit 157 career home runs over nine minor league seasons, is three home runs away from setting a new single season career-high in homers, as he had 32 in 2008. He was named California League "Player of the Week" for June 1 - 8 that season while playing for the Bakersfield Blaze in the Texas Rangers organization. Earlier this season, the Dash's Andy Wilkins won the award, while left-handed pitcher Matt Wickswat won the CL "Pitcher of the Week" award last month.
