
Theriau Selected for Team Pacific

Lethbridge, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes are very proud to congratulate defenseman Alex Theriau on his selection to Team Pacific for the upcoming World U17 Hockey Challenge in Port Alberni, BC from Dec. 29 - Jan. 4, 2009. The 6'2" 185 pound Theriau has played 16 games for the Hurricanes in his rookie season while notching two points (2A) and a plus/minus rating of zero. Theriau a resident of Duncan, BC was drafted in the first round (6th overall) of the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. In 2006-2007 he anchored the blue line of the 2007 Western Canadian Bantam Champion Burnaby Winter Club. Theriau has continued to develop as a solid an all-around defenseman with a very well rounded game and good size.
The World U17 Hockey Challenge is the unofficial World Championship for this age level and is one of the first stages of the Hockey Canada program of excellence; to identify players for the U18 National Team and U20 World Junior Team. In addition to the five Canadian teams (Pacific, Western, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic), there will be five international teams from Slovakia, USA, Russia, Germany and Finland. In the past, Team Pacific has captured four straight silver medals (2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006) and fourth place finishes in 2006 and 2008 at the U17 World Hockey Challenge.
Last season, Hurricanes rookies Carter Ashton (Team Western) and Brennan Yadlowski (Team Pacific) played for their respective teams at the 2007 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in London, Ontario with Ashton helping lead Team Western to a bronze medal win. Ashton's line mates with Team Western were fellow WHL top prospects Jimmy Bubnick (Kamloops) and Brayden Schenn (Brandon)
Hurricanes prospects Mark Reners of Pincher Creek and Ryon Moser of Calgary were among the 27 Alberta finalists for Team Pacific who attended a week long provincial U17 camp this past July. Also among the finalists were Lethbridge natives Connor Cox, Blake Gal, Brock Hirsche and Brad Ross.
