Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Looking to bounce back after a game one loss last night, the Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park to face the Tucson Toros on Friday evening. Electing veteran Anthony Pluta (4-2) for the start, the Seals took on Tucson native Cody Walden (3-1) on the hill for the Toros.
Taking a 1-0 lead for a second consecutive night, the Seals opened the scoring when Colin Moro powered a solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the third inning. Following a scoreless fourth frame, the Toros responded to take a lead of their own.
After Jose Valdez drew a walk to lead-off the fifth, back-to-back singles from Ron Perodin and Ryan Priddy cashed in a pair of runners for Tucson, and gave the visitors a 2-1 lead. Adding to their advantage in the top of the sixth, the Toros used an error to Seals third basemen Brian Rios to set up a single from Francisco Plasencia and an RBI double off the bat of Luis Apodaca to score their third run of the game.
Two batters later Walden helped his own cause with run-scoring single before a wild pitch plated Apodaca to give Tucson a 5-1 lead. Putting the game away in the top of the seventh, a first-pitch home run from Lino Garcia against Seals reliever Mike Koons combined with an RBI base hit courtesy of Jose Valdez gave the Toros a commanding 7-1 lead.
Pulling back within four in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Seals made it a 7-3 game when Wilver Perez scored Jerry Madueno with a base hit before crossing home himself on an throwing error to Tucson third basement Wally Backman Jr.
The Toros padded their lead in the top of the ninth, however, getting another two-out hit from Valdez to collect their eighth run of the game. Turning to reliever Jason Hanna in the final inning, the Toros improved to 5-0 against the Seals this season with an 8-3 win in game two.
An impressive performance from Cody Walden was enough for the left-handers' fourth win on the season while Pluta took the loss for the Seals despite four shutout innings early on. Two hits and two RBI's from Jose Valdez led the offense for Tucson, while Colin Moro's 2-for-2 outing was the lone highlight for the Seals in a losing effort.
The Seals will now refocus with game three of the series slated for 7:05 p.m. (PT) tomorrow night. Tickets are available by calling (250) 220-7777, or online via www.victoriaseals.ca. The contest will also be broadcast online on the Victoria Seals Broadcast Network via the âWatch Live' link at www.victoriaseals.ca.
