Edmonton Capitals News Release

Wailuku, HA - The Edmonton Capitals were on the losing end of an intense pitchers' duel on Friday night in Maui, as Na Koa Ikaika emerged with a slim 2-0 decision.

The Caps are now seven games into their 10-game road trip that took them first to Orange County and then on to Maui. They have split the first four games against Na Koa Ikaika, after winning on Monday 6-5, losing Tuesday 12-3 and rebounding on Wednesday with a 5-4 decision.

Friday night's shutout was made possible by four different Maui pitchers shutting down the Caps' usually potent offence - they lead the league in home runs and are fourth in runs scored. Starter Harold Williams scattered six hits over five innings and struck out seven Caps, while Clayton Uyechi came in for the sixth and seventh, T.J. Macy tossed a perfect eighth and Jamie Vermilyea earned the save.

The only offence Na Koa Ikaika needed on the night came from a Gered Mochizuki RBI single in the first, and a solo home run by the pitcher, Williams, in the third. For the Caps, short stop Enrique Cruz and first baseman Cliff Brumbaugh each went 2-for-4 on the night, while second baseman Matt Rogelstad's double was their only extra-base hit. Starter Evan White took the loss for Edmonton, though he only gave up two runs on five hits.

The Caps (9-8) and Na Koa Ikaika (7-3) play their fifth game in a row against each other tonight at 10:35 p.m. (MST). They conclude the series with a double-header on Sunday, and the Caps finally return home to face the North Division first-half champions, the Chico Outlaws (9-8), on Tuesday - the first of 13 consecutive games at TELUS Field.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
